Newbie here
« on: January 13, 2010, 08:16:00 AM »
New guy here looking to take the plunge into the trad pool.  Problem is, I don't know where I should start.  I've gotten into carving my own duck decoys, and now the idea of going traditional with my bow is getting more and more appealing.

I've considered trading my compound for a quality recurve or longbow, but I'm leary of going quite that extreme.  I don't think that I would be dissappointed with that dicision, but I would hate to be stuck, too.  I'm also considering buying a kit or even just an osage stave off the 'net and building my own bow.  I would really like to shoot something I created myself, but don't want to be turned off of trads because I made a peice of crap.  I don't have much (i.e. any) extra cash, so I'm kinda limited in my options.

Anyway, that's enough rambling.  I know that many here have been in the same boat as I am, so I guess my first question is what should my first step be?

Welcome Jonathan,
One of the first things that I would do is to go to the links of your state on this site and try to find a local traditional organization to become a part of.  You don't have to go right out and buy equipment.  I would go to some events and try out some bows.  Even most local clubs have a group of traditional shooters belonging to them.  Hook up with these folks by telephone or e-mail and set up a meeting.  Perhaps while they are haveing a practice session.  It's just like entering any new venture.  Be polite and ask questions.  Most trads are more than willing to help and offer advise.  Most have extra equipment that they will let you try while you are together.  One piece of advise, don't brag on past kills and experiences with modern equipment.  Remember, you are the new guy here.  Be humble and you will be rewarded with new friends and knowledge.
If it isn't life or death, it's no big deal.

I am new to Tradgang, as well, and it has been a great experience. You ask for advice and you get high quality advice. You ask for help, you get it. I started with Traditional and never tried Compound so I use Tradgang to educate me. Doc Pain is right, be humble, ask questions, and it's great.

I would buy a old Bear recurve thats a little on the light side and work on my form a lot.

You will have no problem getting your money back when you get ready to sell.

I have around 30 Bear bows in all shapes and sizes so if i can help you out let me know.

Welcome Jonathon. Trad is the trail less taken. Though sometimes hard to follow, it'll take you places you'll never see anywhere else.

One warning against trad shooting though-
If you start you won't quit. It's an addiction. At least for me anyway.  :archer:

Johathan,

Welcome and yes heed the advice from the guys above.  So much great advice to be gleamed from the long timers in here!

I'm hoping you wont feel stuck with trad equip. I've only been doing this maybe 18 months but I've found these bows to be extremely versatile in hunting situations.  One thing that helped me acclimate to trad is that I put away my compound and never looked at it again. Trad was something that I'd pondered but was worried I wouldn't be good enough to handle.  After 1 week of shooting a trad bow I was having so much fun that I put the compound away for good.  Get ready for some real fun!

Welcome Jonathan!
It seems daunting at first, but the info you get here and the support for any question that'll pop into your head is simply amazing. I don't think I'd of become as fond of archery as quickly as I did were it not for TradGang. The learning curb is significantly shorter thanks to the centuries of experience on this site.

Welcome Jonathan. You have some good shoots in NC and plenty of TradGangers who will lead you in the right direction. Hook up and enjoy the experience. Compounds depeciate pretty quickly, so if your thinking about selling it, you better get with it or you'll take a bath. Likewise they can be replaced pretty easily if you decide to go back.

Thanks for the invites, everyone.  LongbowGuy83, I really appreciate your invite to come out and shoot.  I think I may have a youth event scheduled for Feb. 13th, though.  If not, I'll certainly try my best to be there.

Been spending some time today reading and I really would like to try to make my own bow, even if it's just a board bow to start with.  What can I say, I just really like using a draw knife and rasp.

I didn't mention that I do have some, very little but some, experience with traditionals.  A former co-worker let me borrow a BW t/d recurve for a few weeks.  I really enjoyed shooting it, even if I didn't have it for long enough to really get the hang of it.  This may turn out to be the first step of a long journey.

Well, as everybody knows money's tight right now.  Just don't have the extra change to drop on a trad, and the compound isn't moving very fast.  I thought I might throw an offer out there, if any mods have a problem with it feel free to delete.

I carve duck decoys.  They're all carved from cedar, hollowed, sealed, balanced, and painted with artist's oils.  These were made to hunt, and they go in my rig every time I go.  I'm still new to the craft, but making improvements.  I thought I'd see if anybody would be interested in possibly trading a bow for a decoy(s).  I'm not looking for much, just something that shoots decent.  If you've got one gathering dust drop me a pm and we can discuss the options.

Thanks
