Aluminum for hogs?
« on: January 18, 2010, 03:56:00 PM »
Ok, I have my 55lb recurve shooting 2020's with a 150gr two blade magnus perfect.
I have always hunted with carbon and not sure what to expect from aluminum on them tough ole pigs. Shot around a 525gr carbon on hogs befroe and never had any problems with pass thrus.

What do yall think about a 593gr aluminum and hogs?

you will have to pick up your arrow on the other side if you hit very well.  Good luck.

You'll have no problem. I have had excellent results with a 50# Hill longbow and 2018 arrows weighing around 550 grains.

If you know the vitals on a hog you should have no problem.  http://www.texasboars.com/anatomy.html

I guess it's not just me.  I still like aluminim arrows.  But then again, I like carbon and wood too.  I'm currently shooting wood shafts....I guess I just like them all.

Last one I killed was with an alum (2213), and all he did when I double lunged him was run 50 yards & die...

These pigs have really heavy shields, I've killed some with shields close to 3in thick.
My carbons always got full pnetration, but not always a pass thru.
Just wonder on the ones that didn't pass thru how aluminum would have done.
Guess I just have to shoot one to find out...hopefully within the next week or so.

Aluminum does everything carbons will do with a lot less hassle. So do woods.

Amen, brother.

Far easier to get adequate weight w/o a lot of fiddling, tune, fletch, and far, far easier to tune broadheads on...

Thats why I am going to them.
Tired of finicky carbons. Everytime I get a set tuned they quit making that particular arrow.  :banghead:

Aluminum is a relatively soft metal and chemically "donates" atoms fairly easily.  If this donated aluminum gets into the pigs circulatory system, it can be very harmful to their health.  8^)

Last time I used an aluminum arrow on a pig, he ran thru the brush and the arrow just laid over and broke off. I find my wood arrows a tad tuffer in that department.

Unless I'm mmmmmmissing something here, the material doesn't matter but the total weight does. I promise that pig won't care if it's aluminum or graphite :-)
