What string material for Pronghorn T/D
« on: January 22, 2010, 01:13:00 PM »
What type of sting material are you guys using for a Pronghorn T/D longbow.  Decron or fastflight.  Can you tell me which one seems to perform the best.

fast flight or any of the high performance/low stretch strings will work fine on your pronghorn.
also, dacron/b-50 will work on any bow.

Herb Meland sends two fastflight strings with his bows. However I have always used B-50 on my pronghorn I believe it is quiter than the other materials.

My pronghorn came to me 2nd hand with a hard string.  I put on an 8 strand D97 by Josh Sowerby, aka Oliverstacy, and the two seem to get along very well.

8125 or Dynaflight '97.  How the string is made and how you tune will make a lot of difference also.  Another thing to watch is nock fit.

Bought my TD Pronghorn used, but mint condition;  59#@28 inches.  Fast Flight string that came with it kept stretching.  Ordered two new D97 strings (16 strand)from recommended shop.  First string stretched over an inch in one month, and was still stretching after several hundred arrows.  Second string failed after one month while shooting.  I had to constantly check these strings since they seemed to continuously stretch.

Ordered two S4 strings (18 strand)from George at Tollgate.  Shot both in and set both up.  I have shot one for about 9 months now and no stretch after initial break in.  Very happy with the S4 from Tollgate.  I don't trust D97 based on my own experience.  Don't know if an 18 strand D97 would have worked better but no need to try it since George steered me to S4.

Bowslinger, how the string is made will have as much or more to do with it as the material.

Short answer, that is very unusual for Dynaflight.  I haven't kept up with how many pounds of the stuff I've gone through.  I have gotten one or two "bad" 1/4# spools over the years, but other than that nothing like what you experienced.

For what it's worth, if 16 strands of Dynaflight '97 didn't hold up, 18 wouldn't have been any better.  It was either some bad material, poor workmanship, or both.

Did you contact the stringmaker about the problem?  I know if it was me I'd want a chance to take care of it.

My personal choice for my Pronghorn T/D's is 10 strands of Ultra cam, padded loops to 14 strands if the strings are well made about 25 shots and it should be shot in and no more stretch. Very quiet, I shoot mine with a brace height of 7 inches. Just my experience yours may be different.

Chad,

This is one of only two traditional bows I have owned that is fastflight compatible.  I ended up buying two Pronghorns the same weekend off of Tradgang.  Having no experience with any string material other than Dacron on a traditional bow, I thought it must be the D97.  I did not contact the shop I purchased them from, though maybe I should have.  I felt it was probably materials, not the maker, since the shop came recommended by the bowyer.

The only guys I shoot traditional with are guys who know less about traditional than me, that I got started, and I am not what I would call very knowledgeable about traditional gear.

I make D97 strings for all my bows, Pronghorn included. Quietest bow I own, even with the Dynaflight.
