Adjusting nock tightness?

Any tips on adjusting the throat of the nock to fit on the string better? The bottom part of the nock fits fine but I think the pinch part is too tight. I thought I remembered a tool made for it but can't think of it now.

Boil some water and dip the nocks then shape them to your serving.

you can use double sided fingernail board and sand open the nock throat 'pinch' tabs.  

or reserve the bowstring's center serving.

tight nocks will give consistency issues more sooner than later!

Fold sandpaper, fit to your liking....only takes a few strokes and you're good to go.

It's been said many times before, suggest you leave the nock as it is, and change your string thickness.  

My bow came with a 16 strand string... I went to a 14 strand string, with padded loops  (and yes, my bowyer made both strings).

Sanding the nocks, or changing the string strand thickness... it's all what you choose to do.

I saw this in the Three Rivers catalog. Never seen one before or used one. Just a fancy finger nail file I think. Anyway just thought I would throw it in the mix. Maybe somebody has used one and can comment on it.

I use the hot water, hold it in the hot water 20 seconds or so, put it on the string and twist right, then left a bit till I like the fit, then dip in cold water and recheck..

Plastic will allow more manipulation in this manner than it will from abrasives, and you can adjust tighter or looser.

man I use hot water to take nocks OFF I'd be afraid of screwing up the glue bond!

I also just adjust the serving.  The last string has some mono served under the 62 braid to bring it up to the right diameter.

Check out the Needle files at Harbor Freight. They sell a 12 Pk for $3.99.... makes shaping nocks a snap. These are all Ive needed since finding them. If I new how to add a link here I would. Good Luck.

As mentioned sanding or filing to increase nock throat width.   Heating to decrease (pinch shut) nock throat width.  Try using a different style/brand of nock.  You can increase your string thickness in several different ways.  You can increase/decrease the diameter of the serving i.e. 0.18, 0.21, 0.22, 0.26  any of these in combination should allow you to arrive at a "good fit".  There are probably some other tricks as well.  This is a very important detail IMO that is often overlooked.  I pay particular attention to this when bare shaft tuning.  You do not want the nock to hang onto the string any tighter than it has to, but you also don't want the arrow to just fall off either (annoying).

If the nock fit is too tight, get the string served with a smaller serving.  If it's too loose, get a larger serving or use dental floss to build up the nock point for a custom fit, then add a drop of super glue.

Filing on nocks can be dangerous.  Sometimes they break with no filing.

Yeah Chad.  It should be added that you don't sand the throat of the nock. You are only sanding the sides of the nock that are actually BEHIND the string on the shot. You are NOT altering the 'working' part of the nock.  You are not jepardising the nock at all if done properly.

The file on a Leatherman is just the right size for me, but you do have to watch the throats, like Terry mentioned.  And be sure to count the strokes.
