Something I Would Like To See: Semi-Finished Bow Kit
« on: January 27, 2010, 11:14:00 AM »
Something I would like to see for use project challenged guys who aren't interested in becoming bowyers but would like to give bow building a shot...

A TD recurve kit which has had the riser & limbs completed & fitted but not finished.  Sort of like the muzzle loader kits that are available.

Even I could complete a nice bow if all I had to do was sand it down & apply the finish.

How about it, bowyer-dudes?...

Hey NDTerminator,

I live near a place that can do that for you.  I believe they call them "glue-ups".  The place is called Old Master Crafters.  The sell wood for bow building and advertise in TBM.  If you'd like me to I can get the phone number.  I know they can send some pics and prices to you in the mail.  Let me know.

I just re-read your post.  I'm not sure if they do take down kits.  Doesn't hurt to ask though.

Howard Hill does not make TD recurve blanks.  You may want to check with Mike and Jason at Dryad.  They do unfinshed bow blanks--sponsors here as well.

Dan Toelke will make you a preshaped TD Recurve. You have to do the final sanding and the finish.
Here is the one I did. He answered a ton of questions for me while in the process of finishing. I used Thunderbird satin finish.

Bingham used to do that years ago. They have 3 different levels of completion you could choose from.  My first recurve was a Bingham semi-finished and was one of the best bows I ever owned.  They stopped doing it in the late 80's or early 90's.  I wish they would do it again.

I have looked and look for almost exactly what you are asking for, and I have not found a takedown that  was in a price range that I was able to spend.
Ask me about CTO.

Wilderness Archery did that in the 1980's.  I bought one from them.  All it needed was minor shaping and sanding.  It was a takedown bow.

Dryad is a sponser here and they offer several 'kits'. They also are good folks to talk to.

But allas no TD recurve.  I think Mark Horne is the only one doing that and his take more work then your asking for.

Problem is to take them as far as you suggest, you'd be paying within $150 of total cost.

Call Mark Horne or go to their website and check it out.

Mike

And George $150 is more then you'll pay for a bow total.  LOL
