Ordering a Shrew, need help with arrows
« on: January 27, 2010, 01:32:00 PM »
I am pretty new to Traditional archery, I have just ordered a Shrew Lil recurve 54' at 58#. My draw length in 26in (wrestlers build), and I will mostly be hunting whitetails with a occasional hog hunt.

I need a arrow & broadhead combo that will do double duty. Will 550gr total weight will be enough? A 150gr broadhead/fieldtip, along with a weighted insert?
Let me have some of your thoughts...thanks Bryan

Are you looking for Wood, Carbon, or Aluminum?

I contacted Ron when I first purchased my Classic Hunter and he recommend some arrow choices that were perfect.

This is what I use for a similar setup, and I think it would work very well for you:

AD Trad Lite (or the even better Hammerhead Trad Lite) shafts, 100 grain brass inserts, uni-bushing inserts with g-nocks, 4 x 4" 90 degree fletching, 150 grain cut on contact broadhead.

Paul Mattson of Badger Arrows who posted above would do a great job of making up the arrows for you, and he has made some just like them for my Shrews. I can't absolutely guarantee they will fly well for you, but I almost can. The AD shafts are very forgiving of spine and point weight. And both models of those shafts are very tough, especially the Hammerheads. If you don't mind spending a few dollars more on the Hammerheads, I would definitely recommend them. You would have to work to break one and will probably lose them first. Animals can break any shaft if the arrow is sticking in them after the shot, but that is a problem all of us would like to have.

I shoot carbons out of my Shrew and love them.  You will find that Shrews are pretty easy to tune an arrow to.  I shoot a Samurai that is 55 at 29 and I use .400 carbons with 200gr points.
