A really good/bad day hunting
« on: January 27, 2010, 02:38:00 PM »
Have you ever had one of those days in the woods? Got up late, my son was slow moving, truck didn't want to start, you know, one of those days. Got my son in his stand looked at watch and realized I had only minutes left before legal hunting time. With all this going on I still had that good feeling. Man it was cold and the wind had started blowing just as I got into my stand. About 0930 hours I was frozen stiff, just started having thoughts of hot coffee, bacon and eggs over easy, then it happened. I saw a small 6 pointer come around the bend, then came a nice 8. I was already standing with bow in hand by the time the 6 was 5 yards away. As the 8 closed to with easy range I saw a 12 come right behind them followed by a smaller buck. I brought my bow hand up and the broadhead hit a small branch that has never been a problem before and the 6 stood there looking at me. He had enough and started to walk off. I don't think big bucks are smarter, I think they know geometry. He never offered a shot to this point. The 8 walked away and the 12 started to follow. Just as the angle was about right I moved the bow to follow him and I hit my bow against the stand. Man it looked like Macy's white sale with all those tails waving. I set there in disbelief for about half an hour. Just as I started down who was there watching me? Ya the 12 had circled back around and was standing 8 yards away watching me look stupid. I got down and we went for food, you know cold coffee, hard cooked eggs and burnt bacon. Still beats working.

Even a bad day in the woods is still better than not being in the woods.

All things considered, still sounds like a pretty good morning. Trim that branch and next time it might be even better!

Some days you eat the bear, and some days the bear eats you...  :D

Yup,  I too have had those days, and looking back, loved every bit of it.  You know where a couple nice bucks are roaming around, and still have a tag to hunt them.  Dust yourself off and go get 'em.

That's why we get out of that warm bed.

Well boys round two went a little different today. Colder today, truck still didn't want to start and my son stayed in bed. The 12 pointer never showed but a nice 10 did. Branch was gone and his geometry was a little off. Broadside at 13 yards, total pass through. So with that said my season is now over. Just in time for steelhead fishing.

Congrats David!!!     Now lets see some pictures!!!
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.
