What Would a Canadian Black Bear Hunt Cost??
« on: January 30, 2010, 12:47:00 AM »
Hey all,

A buddy and I were talking the other day and we were trying to figure out what would be a good outing for a few of us to go on.  We used to go on week long fishing trips every year and now we'd like to sorta get back into the swing of things by going on some kind of outdoor "adventure" every year.

I brought up the possibility of going on a hunt together.  Since we are all not independently wealthy, elk, moose, caribou are out as those are much too expensive.  I thought about a Black Bear hunt in Canada as I have heard those can be had for a reasonable price.

Since I have never checking into something like that, I thought I would come and ask you all to get an idea as to what something like that would cost.

Can you all give me an idea or a ballpark figure what it would cost per person to go on a week long Black bear hunt in the deepest, darkest, wilds of Canada?  If you could also include the approximate travel costs, that would be helpful too.

Thanks for the help.

The New Brunswick, and Quebec area you should be able to get one for around $1500.00 spring hunt. I think Onterio is about the same. When you head west of that they tend to jump to $2500.00 and up. The tags for bear in the west are higher cost to. From where your at I would go due north to Quebec. Plenty of bear up there. Good Luck
Don't go with out a Thermacell it's like gold up there. The bugs can tear you up.

Lots of good bear and trout fishing combos up here. Prices are reasonable.
The Bears are plenty as the province had to have many cull hunts because of heavy intrusion in border towns this year and some unfortunate " accidents"
Bring your therma cell and get used to shooting with a net
There are a lot of bear camps, but only a handfull of bear only
I would PM Ken Taylor out here as he has recently written about his way of stalking bear  longbow in hand without bait. He might be the best resource here for Quebec

My 2 cent

Good luck

Consider the money for Alberta.. FULL of bears and you can buy two tags. I thought $2500.00 was a value for my Alberta trip. Another $600.00 for airline ticket plus the new damn extra baggage/weight fees...

You do always GET what you pay for!
I made the mistake of going on "cheap" hunts years ago.  Believe me spend whatever money you can spend as it will be worth it in the end. Think of it as a investment (in your bowhunting) and not an expense..

If this is you first bear hunt spend the money to go to Canada and hunt over bait... Full of bears and you can be selective on which bear you kill. Only take broadside DOUBLE LUNG shots on black bears.  I've seen too many single lung hit bears never recovered because the hunter was inexperienced and or in a hurry.  I am confident in saying that single lung hit bears simply will NOT be recovered. Let the bears come in and take your time.  Eight inch circle mid body tight behind the shoulder equals dead bear every time. Bears are eating machines that want the goodies and will give you a perfect dbl lung killing shot...

Let us know where you go..

Hi Larry,we did Ron henry's  several years ago and had a real good time, actually we did it a couple of times and thinking about it again. The price is right but it's mostly a do it your self thing an he only take bowhunters and has active baits.By the looks of things it's changed a little since we been there (website).http://www.ronhenryguideservice.com/services.html     Bill

Don't know what part of Canada you plan on going ,but i have been to Ontario in 08 and am going back this August.  It depends alot on what type of hunt you are looking for,  fishing included, food uncluded, baiting included,  tenting or cabin,  there are alot of variables.  It will cost anywhere from 800 on up for just the outfitter.  The place we went in 08 was 1700, with fishing and three meals a day included. We stayed in tents but didn't have to lift a finger.  It was out first bear hunt and we didn't know much about it.  So we didn't want to have to worry about small details.  The place we are going this year is 1300.  We are staying in a cabin on a lake.  On top of the outfitter cost the bear tag is around 190 dollars.  Then if you get a bear an export permit is 25 dollars , i think.  The fishing license was around 25 if i remember correctly.  Fill up on gas before you cross the border.  Make sure you have a passport.  Also if anyone has DUI's, might be an issue.     Best thing to do is get online and check out a ton of places and call and talk to them.  See which ones best suit what you are looking for.  We looked at like 40 places and narrowed it down to about 5 and then went form there.  Hope this helps.     andy

If you are interested in Spot and Stalk in British Columbia try Michael Schneider of United Guide and Outfitter.  Michael is a class act and caters to traditional bowhunters.  I had a good experience with him and plan to go back.

Sorry, I didn't actually answer your question on what it would cost.

Current prices on his website for black bear are:

7 Days, 2 - 1, $2,900
7 Days, 1 - 1, $3,600

When I went a couple of years ago there was another $530 in hunting license, tag, and other fees.  I don't know what air fare would be now.

I hunted in Nova Scotia( only half hour from my home) with new outfit called isles guide service. Got a nice 320 pounder and saw nine bear in the three days I was there. several were over 250 and a few days after I got mine another one went 335.

The owner would prefer bowhunters is possible. He shoots compound but did pickup a nice 55# bear grizzly a few weeks before I got there. Hopefully he's been practicing.

My three day hunt was 600 and his full week hunt with 6 days accomodations is 1000.

Excellent service, very knowledgeable and I'm going back. Hopefully there will be a few more trad shooters there this fall.

Elk hunts DIY can be done for alot less than you think with 3or4 guys shairing the cost you could do it for 1000.00 to 1200.00 dollars. Drop camps can be done for 3 or 4 guys for 2000.00 or less.   WIDOW

Hit Up Tom Phillips, His Bear quest trip I believe has 2 openings for this year I went last year and it was well worth the $$$ food and lodging included. If im not mistaken there was 100% shot opportunity. and there were a few firsts (including myself) who got bears on the 1st day..(shoulda waited!! DANGIT!!   :banghead: )
But what a blast and just over $2k
So worth it!!
