Recommended equipment for Hatfield Takedown
« on: January 31, 2010, 03:03:00 PM »
Just getting into traditional archery. I purchased a Martin Hatfield Takedown, 55#. I will be shooting a light pounded recurve for the time being to build my arm strength up. But... In the mean time, I want to get the proper accessories for the Hatfield. What shafts do you recommend for this bow / draw? I'm probably going to go with the Zwickey 2-blades or Wensal Woodsmans. I appreciate any information you can provide. Thanks!

Beamen123 what is your draw length? FF string or Dacron? I had a Hatfield and shot 2018's 28.5" long with 125 points with a Dacron string.

I shoot a Hat. t.d 55# at 28in, My draw is 30.5 im shooting Gold tip traditional 5575 "BLEMISHED" (2dz for what you can buy one) I found the arrows on **** i cant really tell a diferrence in the way they fly but youll need to clean em up with some arra cleaner, the length is 31.5  they are fleched with 5in shield cut full helical(sp)An 8in wrap the overall grains at the fleached end is 26 with the factory knock. The killing end is has a  100gr brass knock topped with a wansel woodman 125g with a 5 grn brass washer. I put a 5g.p.i weight tube in over all they are 656gr and short of a brick wall i havent found anything that can stop them. You might need to play with the brace hight a quater inch at a time to get them to fly perfect for you. or i shoot the same setup with a 3555 31in with 50gr brass inserts...Hope this helps.

Download Stu's Calculator, it's the best thing going for selecting arrows for trad bows.

Things you need:

Bow Stringer, as even the push-pull method risks a twisted limb.

Bow Square, absolute necessity for for checking/setting brace height and nock point.

Extra String, self explanatory.

Glove or Tab, don't go cheap and once you figure out what you like, buy an extra.

Arm Guard, get a good one.  I like buffalo leather.

Practice arrow quiver, I like Dave's Hip Quiver by 3R.

Broadhead Quiver, (when you get ready to hunt) I like the versatility of a side or hip quiver, but there are times I use a bow quiver...
