Hog Hunt Jan 2010

Hey guys I just got back from my first hog hunt! We went down to north east Texas from mi. I used a maple self bow that I built a few months back specifically for this trip. It is 50#@26" and I was shooting cedar shafts tipped with a woody weight and a zwicky eskimo. The owner of Wild Boar Outfitters where we were hunting was a bit sceptical of this set up. Here is what happened.

There was only two of us traditional bowhunters in our group of 6 but they all saw how much fun we were having and I may have converted a couple! I ended up with two hogs both around 125#. We got seven altogether! What a blast! And so much good meat!

Both of my shots stuck through the other side of the hogs quite a bit, and on one the arrow sunk in almost to the feathers! I was suprised how well that bow did but that just shows what a heavy tuned arrow tipped with a razor sharp broadhead will do even out of a slow bow. The first hog I hit a perfect. I took a slightly quartering away shot from a stand and the arrow came out in font of the opposite shoulder. It went fifty yards and piled up. The second Hog I hit a little high but took out the top of both lungs. That was our first time hunting hogs and we were all suprised by how smart they are. They would sircle in downwind before coming in and bust me over and over again. It sure gets your heart pumpin to see a group of twenty hogs come tearin down the trail toward you! I always hear about what a problem are in Texas and after seeing some of the trenches those things dig and how fast they clean out food sources I can see why. I just wish some of our problems here in Michigan were so much fun!

Congrats!!!! Sweet bow. just keep those heads sharp the hog population in Michigan is growning. Dispite what the DNR is trying. They can be hunted here anytime just have to find them for the moment. But if they keep growing :-)

Good going Lee! Love to see TX pork turned into sish kabob by an arrow from a self bow. Nice looking bow, and I’m glad you put it to good use on those TX hogs.

Thanks guys! Yeah I hear the hog population is rising here. I'd be more than happy to try to contain it! seems like right now they are kinda few and far between here tho at least in my area

Bill, Congrats.
What was the ranch like? Big, small, lodging, anything you could offer would be great.
Nice looking bow too.

Congratulations!! I like the selfbow. I tried to take a hog with my osage selfbow this past fall, but didn't get any shot oppertunities. I'm going to try again this year. Again, good job and congratulations.
