Arrows
« on: February 04, 2010, 10:58:00 PM »
Ok let's start with the facts.

I don't have any experience with arrows other than I shoot them out of my bow. The very closest I've come to tuning is spine wt and cutting to length.

I don't have any experience with carbons.

I can't build an arrow that would suit me so someone else is going to build it.

I'm trying to turn over a new leaf and get away from just going to the arrow buckets.. yes buckets plural...like (4) 5 gallon buckets of them and grabbing 5 or so because they have the same color fletch. Some may not be the same length but the look a lot alike.. ie same color.

In other words...HELP!!

My plan is to go thru every arrow I own and really cull hard. Save some for just plunking around and stumping. Then I intend to donate the rest to the range at this years MoBoJam for the kids to shoot.

I would like to then shop for at least a dozen carbons(ready to shoot)

Am I being realistic to think this plan will work?

OK, I'm stiffening up, prepared for the worst so give me your best shot..lol

God bless,Mudd

I'm sure you can do what you want to do, but it's a little tough to steer you in any particular direction without knowing more about what you shoot, weight, draw length, etc.

For years, I bought the Gold Tip arrows made by Black Widow.  I'm sure that either the Gold Tip 3555 or Gold Tip 5575 would work for you, as long as you're not drawing less than 35# or more than 75#.

If you're drawing between 50-55#, you could either go with a 3555 and a lighter weight tip as a target arrow, or a 5575 and a heavier tip as a hunting arrow, assuming your draw length is somewhere close to 28".  On either side of the 50-55# range, the choice is rather obvious.  If your arrow length is much more than 29", then you'd go to the 5575 at a lower weight range, and if your arrow length is much less than 28", then you'd stay with a 3555 up to or maybe even past 55#.

Once you decide on a basic spine, and cut the arrow 1" past your draw length, you can "fine tune" it, so to speak, by trying different weight points, 100 125 145, until you see what flys best.

None of this is as good as bare shaft tuning, but it will get you close enough to have an arrow that flies well enough that it would be hard to tell the difference.

Just noticed you're from Mid-Missouri, so you're probably not that far from Nixa.  I'll bet if you went down there, the boys would help you get set up with an arrow that would work for you.

Thanks! There's a reason I didn't list draw weight of the bow. I don't own what I intend to be shooting come bow season....yet! My draw length is 28 or about 28 I guess. I've been thinking about putting a stripe on whatever arrows I end up with so I'll have another check point to make sure I come to the same draw each time. I figure if I have enough fail safes maybe I will stay consistent..lol

Mudd I hear you. I think unless you are really fanatical about archery and have lots of bows we can make it simpler.

Find ONE bow that you truly LOVE..the right weight - the right handle grip - the right length - and the right price.....

Then The bowyer can probably help you most.....they know how their bows shoot and their customers tell them lots about the tuning.

That's why when i bought my Shrew I asked Ron and then Paul Jalon and he set me up with some arrows to test after the one I BOUGHT weren't working out.

BINGO I had woodies that worked.

When I bought my ACS I asked them about woodies - they had some ideas about them and the carbons I should use...BINGO  they nailed the carbons and Again I went back to Paul Jalon and he nailed the woodies.

The bow and arrow makers (TO SELL BOWS ARROWS and keep ppl happy) better know what arrows will shoot out of what types of bows or they aren't in business very long.

They are great if we just ask them and are honest about our draw length and the weight of heads we want to shoot. They have been around and if they aren't sure they will get you a test set to play with..ATLEAST that's been my experience

Keep smiling bud - I don't even have a bow now 9waiting for the new 56" ACS and my arm has tendonitis so bad right now from a work injury I can't lift a two litre jug of milk

Smile big guy...you'll be ok

Very good advice above. If your into target shooting get some 3555's with light points and then also get some 5575's with heavier points. And if your coming from a heavy wood background maybe some 7595's even with a heavier point. I have some on the way actually to try out myself.

Thanks Jerry. I'll get to meet with the bowyer this weekend and I'll follow your advice. Assuming the bow I'll be shooting is what I expect it to be.

If you get to meet your bowyer you would be miles ahead of me - I live 1600 miles from the closest thing called PEOPLE.

All my big purchases seem to be online - I HAVE to trust everyone.

If you get to see him - shoot a bow that you will want to purchase and try some of his arrows - WOW that would be the best - you are sooooooooooooooo lucky maaaaaaan.

I have arrows ordered for the new ACS and I haven't even seen it yet - I will tune it the best I can with all the weights I have and then get the broadheads.

I have sfari's that weight 1000 grains with the 300 grain tips and I have some MFX 340's and some AD carbons coming asap.

Out of all of those I should be able to comeup with a fast efficient arrow for most of my hunting especially sheep and a buffalo buster.

Good luck and let us know how it works out bud
