feather chopper vs featherburner

can someone tell me the differance between the two.is one better than the other at cutting.

The chopper cuts, and the burner burns.  The burner gives you the option of bending the wires to whatever shape you want.
 The chopper you have to buy a different blade for each style.
 Just remember to burn them outside.....a litlle smelly.

I like my burner,like said you ar not limited to one size per chopper.I have had my burner for 15 yrs. and still works great.

I have both but prefer the burner for it's versatility. I do all my feather burning on the front porch...in a breeze!!!

I started them same post 2 weeks ago I have some choppers and based on the info I got I bought a burner by far it supperior to the chopper.  Way more accurate all feathers are the exact same. Get a burner and never look back.

Blades do bend on the choppers.

Are there any special type full length feathers you should get,The ones I get for Flu Flu's seem a little soft?

Nope.  When you cut the feather, you get rid o the softer top edge of the feather.  Unless you are doing some extremely high cuts, that feather will stiffen up a bunch.

I chop and burn. I've found that for doing spliced feathers the burner can't be beat.
My wife also lets me burn feathers in the house, at least until I set off the smoke detectors!

Do you guys burn the feather before gluing them to the shaft or after? I haven't tried this yet. Seems like if you did it with the feathers on the shaft there would be a chance of burning the finish on the shaft....? But then if you burn before gluing them you'd have to have them laid out flat to get an accurate shape...?  Edgamacate me....

You burn tham after gluing to the shaft  you will not harm your crest wrap or finish if you have the burner set properly.  The smell is not that bad either smells like burnt popcorn to me but never the less must be done outside.

totally subjective stuff - have used both burners and choppers for decades.

both will get the job done.  burning stinks and smokes lots.  chopping is noisy.

i no longer have a need for a special custom feather shape, so i prefer to chop these dayze with a vario or modded li'l chopper.

i love my burner!!!!
"FRD" as for what one cuts better it would be the burner! aslong as your feathers are the same lenght everytime you use that ribbon.
like if you are burning a parabolic shape or a banana the front and the back will be burnt at the same time.
i use 2 ribbons for my shield cut feathers.
one for the length shape and one for the back cut this way i get a real nice sharp edge!
plus i can use the same "length" ribbons to cut 3,4,or 5 inch feathers!!

I have both but prefer the burner.  It gives a more uniform shape between one feather and another.

The chopper gives me problems of not cutting each one the same and many times if not struck in the correct area will not cut entirely through the feather with just one blow.
