Keeping busy
« on: February 14, 2010, 11:26:00 AM »
Thanks to this incredible website I hardly get items checked off my "to do" list around the house because I am always tinkering with my gear. Laid up today recovering from minor surgery but I am able to do light work.  So today, between searching more on this sight and watching some good ole boys make a bunch of left turns in FL, I am going to finish a 1/2 dozen grizzly sticks and 1/2 dozen Trad Onlys with inserts and feathers as needed, foot one with aluminum which I will post later -- basically actually lengthing an arrow I shortened due to sticking it into concrete wall in an unfortunate tuning miscue        Already successfully did this once.  Then, Tie my first nocking pt thanks to todays post, and when able to draw again soon, finish tinkering with a clicker.  I successfully bareshafted after realizing I needed longer arrows when my drawlength grew thanks to Terry's clock form threads.  Still need to cut one down to length (with my no cost -other than already owned dremel- cut off saw i made with scrap wood thanks to seeing idea on Alaskan Bowhunting site)  Had to buy extra inserts because lost one that I was stumping with saran wrap still holding in insert.  The saran wrap tip from this site was great for the incremental shortening during bareshafting.  Held up great in target, not so well on harder than expected sapling i nailed.  Also have to glue in inserts 3 Rivers Trad Onlys.  Bought test kit and had fun experimenting.  Turns out, full lenth 400s fly great for me with a nice range of head wts for test kit (another of my many purchases from the great service at 3 rivers)  Bought those arrows with intention of building a lighter arrow 480ish/9 gpp for my draw wt just to see how it flys.  I have a 50# bear Monatana longbow and 50# Bear Grizzly rc just given to me by uncle.  Fun to compare how the two handle my various tip wt experiments. But also use same shaft with wt tubes to bump up closer to 650gr (per Ashby tests-yeah had to get some single bevels and start playing with EFOC etc)  Grizzly sticks about 685gr and about 21%.  Haven't finished with Trad Onlys yet.  I also bought the Trads because I wanted to use glue in/glue on adapters to in theroy minimize weak pt of screw in head.  Will use same 125 bear grizzly with 75 gr (for now) gluein/on that i use with 75gr steel screw in with Grizzlystiks. Another benefit of good tune is I went out stumping with a bareshaft.  Still hitting what shooting at (most of the time    :D   ) but not tearing up fletching.  Anyway, way to much info.  I love spending the time learning the tuning process and have seemed to figure a little out thanks to you all.  Now the real joy, actually getting out and just SHOOTING, not worrying about all the physics that make for the beautiful sight of a trad bow loosing an arrow at whatever critter, target, stump, leaf you choose.  Fortunately I have a basement and a big lot that allows me to constantly shoot and more importantly practice good form, which once again, continually improves due to experiences of others shared here.  Thanks to all that make this what it is. Just sent in my contributor check to help keep it that way.  Straight shooting my friends.
