Quinns Stallion Setup
« on: February 15, 2010, 04:18:00 PM »
I'm finally getting off the wheels and back into real bow hunting after about a 35yr hiatus.

Surprisingly enough not that much has changed since I last shot recurves and thats the main reason I'm going back. Bad part is my brain has changed..can't remember and need some help setting this bow up.

I posted this on another forum also, but thought I would post it here to get all the info I can.

I've got a 64" Stallion ordered and am trying to get whatever I need to get it setup. I would appreciate any help I can get with a few questions as to what I may need.

First thing I don't know, is what size string nock I need for the D-97 string that comes with it. Small, medium or large?

I'm going to shoot off a rest. So if I use a plunger..which it looks like I'll have to or a Center Rest to get the arrow to left of string..will the Cartel Super Plunger work? It's short and don't know if long enough or not. It's also the cheapest. If it's too short or no good which plunger do I need or should I just go with the Center Rest or can I use the rest that comes with it and build it out enough to get arrow in correct position?

Thanks for any help with this, Hoyt

Hoyt, any plunger should work fine.  I have built the rest plate out with double sided tape and top it off with a piece of Dr. Scholl's moleskin, little more rugged.  If the rest has a 'built in' plunger, I usually shave it off with a razor and then apply the tape and moleskin.  I like the original centerest, not the flipper model.  Pretty much bombproof and probably the easiest to set up.

I tell you one thing, that 64in. Stallion is going to be the definition of smooth!

Thanks, AMB..I've heard nothing but good about the Quinns Stallion. The only reason I've held out this long from going back to recurves is old age and many heart surgeries and stints. Didn't think I could handle a stick bow anymore. But after missing a real good 10pt at 20yds this yr cause I couldn't get my dang peep lined up..that was the last straw.

I got to reading on line and asking questions about what poundage I may be able to handle..etc. and came up with 40lbs. Figured I get a long recurve to help things out and Quinns is suppose to be a smooth one. I really think I can handle 45lbs..but got talked out of it.

I may just go with the Center Rest..just don't know if they have a spring in them or if I even need one. If I don't need one no sense in wasting money on a plunger anyway.

The centerest doesn't have a spring, you really don't need one, in my opinion.  The Stallion is cut past center and it will shoot a wide variety of arrow sizes, with a little piddling.

With the 64in. model, you could have definitely handled 45lbs, but to shoot alot in the off season, the 40lb set will serve you well.  You can always order a second set when you are sure.  And they won't break the bank!

I have several Quinns and sets of limbs. One of mine has the plunger and a flipper rest, stick on, rest of them have bear weather rest with one pad behind them. Use a medium nock, 1/4 above center, should be a good place to start. I honestly like the Bear rest the best, shoots great, with a wide variety of shafts. I also use a wrist sling and bascially hold my quinns with my thumb and index finger, snug. I have a pair of the #40 64" limbs, they shoot as flat as my #50, 60" do with the same arrow. They will flat smoke and are as smooth a recurve limb as you can find. HOpe this helps, pm me if I can help more, just try to keep my set up simple.

Hoyt, welcome to the Quinn family! My 62" Stallion was as smooth as 'butta'. The 64" limb must be very smooth. My Quinns were quite fast. No doubt yours will be, too. David Quinn sure knows how to build a limb. David is very friendly and full of advice. I remember asking him which plunger he recommended. It was one from Lancaster Archery but I don't remember the name. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks again AMB, the second set of limbs is what I had in mind, but after reading Kogers post I many not need them.

Koger..preciate the info. That gives me all I need to go ahead and order what it takes to get started when the bow gets here..end of this month.

Knowing that the #40 64" limbs are shooters really eases my mind. Think I'll just go with the Bear rest and pad and keep things simple also.

Thanks for the welcome Shifting Shadow. I'm going to ask David about the plunger model when his daughter calls to tell me the bow is ready.

Agross1..I'm going to start out with the Bear Weather Rest also and build it out with the pads.
Thanks for the info.
