Hitting Left
« on: April 20, 2007, 09:41:00 PM »
Looking for advice,
I am a right handed shooter,55# @28" bear longbow, shooting heritage 250's at 30", 5" shields, and 150 grain Wensel Woodsmans. I shoot 3 under and even though my arrows fly nice I always hit 2-4 inches to the left, up and down I'm fine. I can't train my eye/aim to the right. Can anyone help??

Ryan, Just a guess but you may be over spined. I've had the same problem with my recuve shooting 2117's. Went to a 1916 and all is well now. Good Luck!!!

Another thing you might try is canting the top limb of the bow just a little more to the right. The more you cant the limb, the further the arrow should move to the right. Byron Ferguson demonstrates this in his book " Become The Arrow" and it works.

Thanks for the replies. Can I add more weight up front without changing inserts or broadheads?

check and see if your nocks are too tight..but my guess is you need more point weight up front to weaken the arrow. Keuka is correct in stating that more of a cant will move the arrow to the right...

I  have the heritage 150 and I use the goldtip screw in internal weights.. they screw in to the insert internally by using a long allen wrench and entering the nock end of the shaft.. pretty slick deal.. I hope this makes sense... John at sipsey river traditional archery is a wonderful source of info with great prices..

make sure to keep your bow arm up . If you are droping your bow arm you will shoot left. Just a idea.

Add 150 grains to your arrows point weight and  stop letting your string hand fly away from your face at release, let it go limp and straight back from your anchor, and I am sure you will stop hitting left. Shawn

The weight tubes will, but I believe ya want the weigth concentrated up front, not spread up the shaft. If ya want get 100 grain brass insert and the 150 Wensel, that will be 250 point weight and the arrow will fly like a dart. I believe ya are a tad stiff with your set-up. I will be shooting the 250s out of a 57# Kwyk Styk(I draw 28.5"s) with 250 up front cut to 29.5"s and I am sure it will be a bullet. Shawn

http://www.sipseyriverarchery.com/    talk to john.. he'll give you info on the internal weights.. Id stay away from the weight tubes.. and play with your point weight.. the nice thing about the goldtip screw in weights is you add a litte weight or a bunch of weight to the point.. that way you can fine tune those 250s.. I'm guessing john can hook you up with the allen wrench and weights for under 20.00...the heritage is a great shaft.. you may have been better off with the 150...

It's nice to know there are people out there like you guys, you don't get this kind of info at the archery shop. I'll definitely add more weight.

You know I shot left for years and couldnt figure it out for the life of me. Played the spine game and talked to all the exsperts. Then I took my Bow quiver off.  Problem solved!!!! Shooting with a bow quiver??
Zen without realization of the body is empty speculation. If I could only stop dropping the BOW!!!!!!

I have a bow quiver on now, but it was the same without. I am going to add 100 grain inserts and re-tune.

I believe doug beshere says a bow quiver has a stiffening effect on the arrow.

"Bow Quivers are probably the most overlooked variable when it comes to picking spine. They do however have the affect of stiffening the spine. The ones that bolt to the riser section are not as noticeable as the ones that slide on the limbs but you should take them into consideration. When you are going to use a quiver that slides on the limbs of the bow you definitely need to go down one step in spine." Doug Besherse
