Footed shaft jig question
« on: February 16, 2010, 05:25:00 PM »
I would like to try making my own footed shafts. My question is has any one used a footed shaft jig that was easy and accurate to use? If so where would I go to pick one up? I know that 3 rivers carry's them but I don't know how well they would work. Any information would be greatly apreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Troy

The 3Rivers jig will work with some fiddling.  I haven't used it, but have talked to a few that have.

There was a guy on here a few years ago that designed a really nice 4pt footing jig, took some orders for them, collected the money, then delivered about half.  Guess which half I was it!!       I keep meaning to build myself one... but it's pretty low on my list of projects.

The jig is easy to build at home with a piece of hardwood, two screws, a drill, and a V router bit (which you'll need to make the footed shafts anyway). The original one I made and posted on the Stickbow site ten years ago took me a few minutes to make. I had a tutorial online, but it went away when Geocities closed down.

If anyone would like detailed photos, I'd be happy take some and email them. There's no reason to spend that much money on something that you can make yourself in a few minutes. Just shoot me a PM with your info, and I'll try to get something together tomorrow.

Shakes,

That's a very good idea, and I should probably be smacked in the back of the head for not thinking of it myself.   :D

Folks,

It may be tomorrow before I can get this online. I decided to do a build-along instead of just posting photos, figuring that step by step instructions would be helpful.

Here's the Build-along. If one of the admins would like to move it to the Ho-To forum, that would be great.
