Alaskan Moose Hunt Advice or Literature?
« on: February 17, 2010, 02:16:00 PM »
I'm in the beginning stages of planning a 2011 moose hunt in Alaska. Anyone out there know of any good books or resources where I can learn more about the land and the species? Do any of you guys have any words of advice, maybe things to pack or tactics to try?

if you are going during the late season when they are a bit stupid, try and stick to gluks and scraping they will circle to get wind, more than likely just out of range if you can move up wind while calling alot of times they will get frustrated and just come to you.  if they wind you ods are not good on getting a shot unless you are there just in the right couple days where they are dumbest

Wayne Kubat has a couple of good videos called Love Thunder and Bulls - they are mostly gun, but gives you a good idea of what to expect.

Hunt Alaska Now by Dennis Confer is pretty good. I'm not a fan of Confer, but the book is pretty good.

Bowhunting Alaska by the Alaska Bowhunter Association is good if you can find a copy.

Send me your Email in a PM and I'll send you a couple hunt reports from DIY hunts I did. The information is getting dated as I went in 2001 and 2002.

Just go into it knowing our moose numbers in most areas are REALLY low due to predation.  I am zero for 5 serious attempts.  Not near road stuff but serious, 10-12 day remote trips.

I think the first thing you need is a really tough, good looking, tradtastic partner to go along with you.  Usually people that meet these standards are terrible cooks, so you should plan on cooking too.  ;-)

What Steve H. said!  If that guy is having a hard time killing a moose then the hunting is REALLY TOUGH! Criminy, he could kill a polar bear in Australia! I last hunted for moose in 2002 and from what Steve is seeing, the wolves have eaten the herd down to about nothing. Research your areas carefully.

Alaska Sportsman's Forums (do a search to find their site) offers continuing dialogue on hunting topics in Alaska. You'll have to wade through some material you aren't interested in, but there is a wealth of knowledge there.

Its so bad up here that the State of Alaska is getting ready to rename my town.  They are trying to decide if it should be "Mooseless Pass" or "Wolf Pass".

That would be appropriate considering you killed a nice wolf on your last moose hunt!
