Rasssspppy! Sounds like an old hen gargling with vinegar. When I made it, I just tuned it by sanding the soundboard side on my belt sander, then played with the striker stick until it sounded fairly good to me. Something I did to make it raspy was lightly score the striker at 90 degrees with a toothing plane iron, to make shallow scratches that the sound board would drag across. Plus with that rough finish it holds chalk better for me. There is also about an eighth inch radius on the striker, which seems to engage a smaller bit of the soundboard.

I've made quite a few slates and wingbones. But I have a huge collecton of old calls.A couple late 1800's to 1950's that I just love to carry along and use.I've got some old slate and boxs.I refuse not to take. They just sound alsome to me and the gobblers don't seam to mine either.

I've made a couple of scratch boxs out of door skin. If I can find one I'll try to post a pic. Not as pretty as some but work great and the old door was free:)
The American system of democracy will prevail until that moment when politicians discover that they can bribe the electorate with their own money
