What do your think. . . Pigs?
« on: February 20, 2010, 01:43:00 PM »
Jeff and I were invited down to take a look at some potential pig hunting property yesterday.  Well we got an early start and arrived at about 10.  We grabbed our gear and jumped into the mule and off we went.

I'd never been around this piece of ground before so we got a quick tour.

Everywhere we went we saw this:

Looks like a rototiller gone nuts and trails that cattle have made.  Only no cattle.

Some more pics from another area:

During our travels we spotted a group of hogs.  Sows and weiners.  We tried to get close in the swamp like conditions but could get it done.

Then another group.  More sows and weiners and again they gave us the slip, although at one time they were running right at us in the oak leaves.  Sounded like a tornado coming our way.  They turned right and we couldn't catch up.

Two more groups in the evening in yet two more spots.  One sow was at 14 yds and needed to take two more steps while she was feeding.  The wind swirled and off she went.

We are packing up and headed down again on Tuesday evening to hunt Wednesday and Thursday.

Should be fun.  BTW we saw 30 hogs yesterday.

LOL - well it might be pigs if it is not some of 'em 150# wooly mammoth 'dilla.

Looks like a perfect spot to slow some of the pigs down with some raspberry corn holes.  Just set up in the woods and put the corn hole in grass.

If a 150# 'dilla comes by, use your spent uranium broad heads.  you are gonna need some penetration  :) .

Well there are a bunch of dillas there. But none over about 4#s.

LOL

Yep thinking about a couple spots for raspberry corn holes.  That way when we're gone they'll still be coming.

well save me a 40#er.  if ya saw 30 pigs, ya better take a bunch of arrows.

This is close to the place that i was closing in on some young pigs I had seen crossing into pretty thick stuff.  I walked way around so I could get the wind right.  I was on my knees moving toward the sounds of rooting.  there was one big clump of holly left between me and the sound.  the sound was coming from the end of the holly on my left.  I decided to go around the right side to give me a shoot off my left side.  I was 11 yds from the holly bushes conner when a full grown boar stepped out from behind the holly.  he was right in the middle of the trial I was on.  Looking at me eye to eye, mono e mono, face to face.  he looked about 6' tall and looked like he had about 12" cutters.  he was not scared at all.

I came up from all four to my knees.  He didn't care for that move at all.  I came to half draw.  I looked at the 3" spot i'd have to get an arrow thru if he didn't leave.  coming to half draw really made him mad.  he popped his teeth a couple of times.  I came to full draw.  I was string walking the arrow and had the point right on the spot inside the shoulder that would let the arrow slip into his chest cavity.

He fainted a charged.  scared the hell out of me.  I double clutched the release. the arrow fell about two feet in front of me.  The sound of the arrow hitting the bushes and all the movement casued him to turn off the trail and circle around behind me.

I didn't have the legs to stand up  :) .  I crawled on all fours to get a big oak tree between us and nocked another arrow.  It took all my concentration to just remind myself to breath.....breath in...now breath out....breath in......

he was about 15 yds out looking at me.  he took a step forward.  I forgot to breath again . he looked some more...then left.

That was my most exciting pig encounter.  that was more adrenaline than an old greezer should have dumped in the blood stream at one time  :)

From the pictures it doesn't look like the trees are very big at the new place  :) .  Doesn't look like they have had much hunting pressure either.   :)   Heee Heee

Not huge trees but good for ladderstands if we want too use em.  Probably going to start with my ghillie and a stool and go from there.  Will throw a couple of double bulls in too.

Mike, those trails look like a sheep’s-foot roller got away from some highway construction and went through those woods. Good luck with your hunt. Hope you find some nice, tender ones. I'm just guessing about this, but I can almost taste those pulled pork sandwiches you plan to serve up in a few weeks at the Rod Jenkins shooting clinic!

Rusty, I hope that big, angry brute is the same main character in that “El Rojo Grande” tale you once told us. Otherwise you may be setting up an unhealthy hunting pattern of riling bad tempered swine with few tree-climbing options. Always enjoy reading about your hunting adventures, and I always learn from them. So if we ever get a chance to stalk hogs you will know why I show up wearing those utility pole lineman “climbing spikes”. With those spikes I bet I can out climb a squirrel if I got a mean boar providing motivation.
