Southern Indiana Backpack Turkey Hunt
« on: February 23, 2010, 03:18:00 PM »
I did a solo backpack turkey hunt in Southern Indiana last year.  It was awesome.  I worked a bunch of birds and had a great time.  I wouldn't mind some company if anyone is up for a bivy style, hike-and-hunt, camp where we stop for the night kind of thing.  We'll start at the Spurgeon Hollow Lake Trailhead for the Knobstone Trail.  It is easy to moderate hiking but the hunting is in steep country at times.  I think Darren "Hackbow" Shue is gonna be there with me.  Season starts April 21 and goes through May 9.  I'm think April 30- May 2.

Where exactly is this gonna take place John.

I'm a turkey hunting fool. If I can work out things at home and haven't got my bird by then I would be game.

I've took my bird the past five years opening morning (smoke pole) But I'm going stik only this year so it's a good possibility I may be hunting that weekend and would love to join in.
Heck even if I have my bird already I could tag along and do the calling. anymore I like doing that better anyway. Nothing like calling in a big ol' hammerin longbeard for anther feller waithing in the bushes LOL
Sounds great, I'll try to work it in.

It's north of Salem.  The nearest named "town" is Plattsburg, IN.  It's in the Jackson-Washington State Forest, Washington COunty.

Should be able to get away from people back in there... that's some beautiful, but rough country... I've backpacked in there many times...

If we weren't in the middle of moving our offices and stuff to the new building... I'd be joining you and Darren...

Love to chase those rascals...

Thanks to John for getting this set-up. Not only is he a good friend, but he makes a fair outfitter for me after I moved from IN to PA. Yep.....I'll be there unless some tragedy befalls me. If you're like me and turkeys don't really turn your crank, you can use this hunt to knock the rust off your backpacking skills and start tuning-up for elk season (my plan).

Like twigflicker wrote, there's enough rough stuff to make you work a bit back in there. Should be good for hunting, training, testing equipment and even a little comaraderie. Jon, we're just gonna have to let YOU pick a date for an outing and we'll work around that.    :p

Shoot... that's like shooting in the dark with my wild schedule... Rough week... two funerals this week... both fellows my age leaving a wife and 3 kids each...

But I'm going to make a point to be up in the fall at least for a day... if you guys set a date early... I'll put it on the calendar and just say tough ;-)

Depending on how everything goes with the move maybe we could meet in town (Brownstown or Salem)before or after for lunch or something...
