Moose hunting in Utah?????

I have been putting in for some hunts and started thinking about moose. Anyone have experience hunting moose in Utah?

We have a few. The problem is drawing a tag. If you want to hunt Utah, you better start getting points now. Then by the time you die of old age you might get to hunt once. The other way would be to buy a CWMU tag. Those are controlled by the landowners and they sell them. A CWMU tag is a Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit tag. You have to have an idea of where to put in also. Some areas have moose but are overrun with other hunters for other hunts that are going on at the same time. So it takes a little research. Gary

I spent some time scouting for moose with a guy in Utah.  We backpacked way in and MAN, did we see moose.  I think we saw over a dozen different bulls in the drainage we were in.  There are some really good moose in Utah.  Just keep applying, you never know.

I just went to the DNR web site for Utah.  Their hunting regulations are like trying to give yourself eye surgery.
After reading for a few minutes, I can't even figure out if a non-resident can even apply for permits.  From what I gathered you have to buy a regular Utah hunting license before you can even apply for permits.  Which makes no sense at all, because of the non-resident thing.  Maybe someone can clear this up for me.

Yes you do have to have a valid Utah hunting license before you can put in for any hunts. Nonresidents have to pay $65 for that. Look at it like a tax. We pay $11 for it. It last for 365 days, so if you put in now you can theoretically put in next year before the anniversary of the license. You don't need the license to hunt only a tag. The $65 is nothing though compared to the $1513 price tag for the tag itself. They do let nonresidents put in for everything though. We can only put in for one deer area, one elk area, and one once in a lifetime hunt. Like I said, getting the tag is the hard part. There are some pretty good units in Utah. Gary

There are some decent bulls here in utah. Now that non-residents can put in for all of the once in a lifetime tags(moose,bison,sheep,mt.goats) odds are going to be tougher. Half of the tags on a unit go to the people with the highes bonus pionts,so put in on a unit with more that one tag. But you might get lucky someone always draws a tag in the lighting round. We use to have an archery moose tag but that went to the way side. I'm hoping to draw the cow moose tag this year,I am at max pionts and there were only 28 of us last year. If you can afford it I would recomend some of others tags like bison. The Henry herd is one of the few wild herds that is recognized by P/Y club or B/C club. You can look at all of the drawing odds and harvest stats on the DWR's web site. Good luck to you.

i feel blessed that here in australia all our game species are feral. no need for tags or licences for all but a couple of them. oh and you can hunt all year round for just about all of them too.

6 months in BC canada as a mad keen bowhunting non resident was ordinary!
