Self nock question
« on: April 22, 2007, 08:18:00 PM »
Alright gentle men im thinking of doing some self nocks in hard wood arrows is there a need to wrap them at the base if i do a good job of keeping them square and true to the shaft. Id like to get away from that if at all possible im not really big on that look.
Please god let me live just more day in the woods.

I depends on he diameter of the shaft and the draw weight of the bow. If everything is true it well work.

Absolutely yes. Takes but a second. The only nocks I've broken have been unwrapped. Jawge

How bout if they're footed with a hardwood wedge(I used a nifty nocker)  Should I still wrap?

If you add a spine you shouldn't have to wrap...although wrapping is a lot easier than any other solutions.   Pat

I have the remnants of a dozen hickory arrows with unwrapped self nocks. Not a one ever split. With any other wood, I'd wrap. I makes no difference in how they shoot, looks natural and cool, and takes a minute each. If you want utter reliability, efficiency and certainty, go with plastic nocks. My 2 sents. Have fun.

I don't think so, I've only broken about 2-3 self nocks since I've used them, and I don't wrapp all that many. But I know I've broken dozens of plastic nocks, I even broke some shooting at stumps! If you really don't want the wrapping and you want a little extra safety, you could add some glue in the nock.

One of the worst accidents I have ever seen came from an unwrapped self nock. Knock broke on release, arrow left the string at a 45 deg + angle and stuck with athority in the ground less then a foot from a spectators leg.

When I wrap my nocks (as I only shoot self nock) I seperate my artificial sinue into 4 to 6 strands by pulling cut peices apart. When wrapped tight they become almost invisable as the actual strands are not much thicker if any then sewing thread (which can be used as well)

One aditional note, it is very important to cut your nocks to cut across the grain at a 90 deg angle. This is where the strength lies.

Self nocked cedars definitely wrap/ hardwoods you might be able to get away with out it. Sure does wake you up though when the nock breaks on the face side of the arrow and the string tries to remove half yer moustache !
K.S. Trapper may still have a pic of that happening to me during the clout shoot from Mojam '05.I look like someone just slapped the time outta me.

Heck, I might go ahead and wrap them in addition to the hardwood inserts...

I never wrapped mine until I broke one. Then I started thinking about what could happen, and now I reinforce all my self nocks with a wrap or an insert.

That is correct. Just remember that the insert has to go with the grain and the groove at right angles. Jawge
