I Need Some Arrows
« on: February 28, 2010, 06:20:00 PM »
I will be shooting a 70lb at 28" Hill longbow.
I know nothing about arrows but it sounds like carbon arrows are very durable, that's the extent of my knowledge.

1) What arrows do you reccomend, brand? weight? Length?
2) What weight field tips should I have? Weight?
3) What fletching do you reccomend?
4) What knocks are you supposed to use?

I did a search & found some info but it was mostly experienced ppeople asking about things I don't understand.

Also, is this the right place to ask about arrows & other gear?

Thanks

I use a Hill 70#@31 I use wood POC for starters and would say 65-75# class for you and a 160gr head 5" parabolic or shield and a  snap on knocks.I shoot a longer shaft then you would and use 75-85# so I think 65-75# would work for you.

Hunt, he is referring to the fletching length and shape.  5" is kinda the standard length.

The feather, the parabolic and shield are 2 of the types of cuts or shapes a feather can be made into.you can get them pre cut.I would get one of the sponsors to make you some arrows at first and then you can dabble in to doing it yourself.Go to the sponsors banner and look for the feathered shaft(My Choice)and click on it and look at what they have and order some in that poundage, They will help you out as to what you need in feathers but I recommend the 160gr Head. All this stuff you can get from 3R look up top and click on the 3R add and request a catalog.Good luck

Make sure about your draw with that longbow. Some find that the more fluid form as Jerry Hill would explain can result in a shorter draw length. That is quite a jump in draw weight, watch that your form holds up with the heavier bow.  It is quite easy to get too stiff an arrow if you are not drawing the full 28". You will be happier with your Hill long bow if you shoot it like Hill would.

You could take a look at the Arrow Dynamic Traditional's, CX Heritage 250's and Gold Tip 55/75.  Either one of these would work for you.

I agree with pavan on that.Buy the book Hitten-em like Howard and it will show you the correct way to shoot a Hill.

Hunt,
I read your other introduction post and it seems you are new to archery...that being said, unless you are built like "sasquatch"..70lbs is a LOT of bow to start with!
I am not trying to insult, but that is way too much bow for a beginner!
Get a much lighter bow, and I mean MUCH lighter and work on your form for a while!
When the form gets perfect, then work your way up to that much weight.
Unless you are hunting elephants, 70 is way too much in my opinion unless you are built to handle it, 70 lbs on a trad bow is much different than 70 on a compound, trad bows don't have any letoff.
If you are new to trad shooting, find a light bow, 25-35lbs and work on your form first, poundage doesn't mean a thing if it isn't controlled, and 50 to 55 will kill anything in North America.
Oops,  I just had to edit this, I didn't read your other post all the way through, I didn't know you had a lighter bow to start with.
Many apologies my friend, I was wrong.
I can't help with arrow choice, I can't shoot a 70lb bow!! LOL.

So how do I go about measuring my draw length? (I'll search this too)

My bow just says it is 70# at 28" I'm not sure what my draw length is.

I am learning on a lighter bow, it's a 45# recurve, the one in the picture on my introduction thread, I haven't & won't shoot an arrow through my Hill untill I'm ready for it.

I plan to use this bow untill I'm confident on my technique & forum.

As far as my build, I am a big ole boy haha 6'1" 250lbs
My first time ever shooting a bow (my 45# recurve Friday night) I shot for 5 hours straight & had no trouble pulling it from the first arrow to the last nor do I have any soreness 2 days later.

If that tells you anything about my build

Thank you guy's so much for the help
Wesley

Hunt,
I got you,
Like I said, I didnt' read your other post all the way through, good job starting with a lighter bow, that is the way to go!!
I didn't mean any harm about you starting out with a heavy bow! I shoot 46 to 50, and to me 50 is a LOT! , LOL!
John
Sorry I didn't read your other post all the way through before I chimed in!  I learned my lesson!

Wesley, shoot with your Root until you get your form nailed down and just draw the heavy Hill to get your muscles in shape.  When you can hold the same form with the Hill as the Root, start shooting it some, too.

When you get your draw length settled, it will be easy to match up some arrows to either bow.  Of course, I'm gonna recommend wood arrows, but I'm kinda ate up like that.  The Hill will like a fairly heavy weight arrow and point.  For the Root, a moderate weight arrow and 125 gr point will do great, IMO.

The Arrow Dynamics Traditional Series Carbon Shafts look like a great shaft.
I like the looks of the shield feathers also, very nice.

I don't have anything against carbon,But with the Hill it's almost tradition to shoot wood out of it.Thats my opinion

I shoot a 68# @ 28 with a 29 1/2" draw putting me close to you if not on par.

I'll second and third the AD Trads as they are very forgiving and easy to shoot. Mine are cut to 30" with the 100gn brass inserts and 200gn tips/broadheads using 4 5" parabolic feathers (no need to find the "cock" feather when nocking.) They fly perfectly and hit with extreme authority. Total weight around 680 gn.

The AD Trads are spendy but worth the price - a REALLY  tough arrow that takes insane amounts of punishment.

GOOD LUCK!!
