Howard Hill and the prune shot
« on: March 03, 2010, 10:44:00 PM »
Many archers have contacted me and ask where did Howard Hill find such a fool to kneel down and let him shoot things off their head. One of the fellows was Buster Wiles, a Hollywood stunt man that was rated amoung the best. Buster hadn't worked in quite sometime and told Howard he needed to make some money." Let's make a short film and shoot something",suggested Buster. " We've already shot most everything", Howard said. "Shoot something off my head", Buster said, and they did,an apple and a prune. I ask Buster if he was wearing any protection under that long haired wig he was wearing, and he said yes,a steel skull cap.I said how thick, "OH 14 gauge" was his replay. "Howard said that if he shot a little low it would glance off",Buster replied.I said," Buster, If he had shot a little low it would have gone through that 14 gauge like hot butter".His answer was"No kidding "!"It may be a little late now but I think I'll go ahead and faint". I wonder after knowing that if Buster ever let anyone shoot anything off of his head!

I always wondered where Mr. Hill found his victims.

I tried something similar to the prune shot. Small tomatoes that fell from the vines, On a wrinkle on my target at 12 yards, got to a point of it being a near miss high or to the side or a hit. So I rigged our old football so it was pointing at me and floated a little tomato on top of it.  I took a blunt with rounded corners and went out the 12 yard line. First shot dead center, the air went out of that football like a bomb went off.

One of the most fun we had indoors one night was just that.

I got a piece of 3/4" PVC pipe and stuffed it in a manakin head (they use at the hairdressers(not sure spelling)....we put a wig on it and stcuk it out about 20 yards....

1 - 1 big balloon - everyone got a chance and we swapped baloons when ppl hit it.

2 - cantelope - drove a wooden dowel down inside it to hold it on. (messy) but fun

3 - orange (well this was when the fun started

first person missed high
second person hit and went through but the orange kinda went sideways a bit.
third person hit the manakin right between the lookers

well the gig was up and everyone just started shooting at the manakin

Well we were laughing so hard we could hardly shoot...we were busting each others arrows cause the target kept moving...on the pvc pipe everytime you hit it it would bend it and then it would sway for quite awhile.

WHAT A BLAST

Here's a picture of the guy (and the group) that won the William Tell competition at the 2009 GORH.  That one got a way from him just a bit...

I've always wondered about that sequence.  That guy must have had less sense than cents to volunteer for something that foolhardy.  Thanks for giving us the scoop!
