Pulling inserts from AXIS ST's

What tool do you use to get these things out? I am having a heck of a time with them right now.

I am a big advocate of careful use of heat applied to a field point to pull inserts from carbon, but.....with the HIT stuff....you're better off cutting length from the rear end.

what rob said, if your just wanting to shorten it for tuning.
if you have to get them out, screw in a field tip and heat it some and then twist it with pliers, if it won't move, heat some more, then try to twist again. have patience, it will eventually come out.

Twisting can pull out the inside of the shaft with the insert. pull straight.

I have pulled some inserts from standard carbons but never had any luck with trying to pull inserts from axis/mfx.You can try heating field point and try to pull.But like Pete W said only pull straight do not twist.I think it is hard to do because the HIT insert is in deep and the insert is longer then a standard insert in a carbon.

Yeah I am pretty leary about heating heating a point. I normally do this but with these being so far in I may just have to cut from the other end.

If they were glued with 24hr epoxy (or similar), don't bother...cut from the back.  They will eventually come out, yes, but likely at the expense of the arrow.
 
If they are the aluminum inserts (and you wantto add brass for some reason), they can be carefully drilled out...takes some time, but isn't too bad.

I use an aluminum broadhead adapter and heat it.  I quit using the epoxy that comes with them a long time ago and use regular hot melt.  I have not had a problem with this set up or had trouble removing inserts.

If they were hot melted in, a 2 1/2", 8/32" brass machine screw works great for removing them.  Heat the screw and pull.

I also used the brass bolt. Heated them up with a tourch. The bolt gets a little hot but pulled out the inserts that where epoxy in.

I have not tried this myself, but was told to put a drill bit ( so it is a little lose) inside the arrow. Jerk the arrow up and down so the bit hits the insert and it should nock it out. Good luck. Alan

I heated a field point.
1. the insert didn't move a hair
2. the edges of the shaft opened up like a mushroom due to excessive heat, and ruined the shaft

I have used the drill bit trick. it works well. Just drop the bit down the back of the shaft and whip the arrow forward a few times. It should bust the insert free. Just watch out.....my buddies son had one let loose and sent the bit and insert through the kitchen window!

Here is a trick for you .....use a heat gun instead of a torch....or a high powered hair dryer will work too, it just takes a bit longer....the heat makes the epoxy brittle. after its good and hot, dunk it into ice water... do this with a field point in it....then take the freshly cooled arrow and drop it a few times straight down onto concrete or a thick steel plate....it actually shatters the epoxy. you can do the same thing in reverse too. throw them in the freezer over night, and then try dropping them on concrete a couple times. sometimes freezing them alone will pop it loose. i prefer this to cutting off  the other end and refletching....
