Who hunts with a Flipper rest?

I shoot a simple stick on rest on my Habu recurve.  The arrow flight is amazing and I can switch back and forth between feathers and vanes without changing the impact point of the arrow. I normally cut the bottom (extra) part of the rest off so that the flipper is as close to the shelf as possible.  I set the nock at about 1/2" above 90 degrees when using the rest.  I am primarily a hunter but shoot alot of 3d and rests are allowed at the Traditonal Bowhunters of Texas shoots so long as they don't have any moving pieces.

Here is what i have been using since 1984. This is a Golden Eagle rubber rest , it is much harder than the Bear weather rest, i therefore cut the bottom 1/3rd of the finger off to make it more flexible and still be durable.I have yet to lose or change one due to wear or hunting conditions. Have fun. This is on a Schafer Silvertip.

Years ago I used a Flipper in conjunction with a Berger button(cushion plunger) on my Kittredge recurve. Worked great...Also used a rest on a Jack Howard Jet...

I now shoot off the shelf because they are more radius and offer less arrow contact. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to a flipper type rest if the urge hits me again.

I seem to recall Sam Fadala testing for Bow and Arrow Magazine ages ago and he said he generally gained about 10 fps by using a flipper rest rather than shooting off the shelf.  Anyone ever test the difference?

I use a Bear weatherrest on my Bob Lee Classic recurve.  I shoot my Schwister longbow off the shelf.  I don't see myself shooting a wide shelf recurve again without some sort of flipper rest.  The difference in arrow flight was remarkable.  Steve

acolobowhnter here on tradgang lives just south in colorado. He shoots a fliper rest on a Stumbo. I will say this if you are going to out shoot him at a 3D event you better get up on the right side of the bed well rested with your head in the game. He shoots with one very well.

I have seen a few fps diffence depending on the shelf material but never as much as 10.That might be the case if shooting one of the old recurves with huge flat shelves that were built to use rest anyway.  :confused:  

I don't use them for extra speed however.I use them for better more consistant arrow flight and easy tuneing with the adjustable ones like the Centerrest or when used with a plunger.As everything with hunting I try and get the most forgiving setup as possible and a rest does that for me.

Hey Randy is being very generous with the compliments.  However, I have shot with a flipper rest of over 30 years.  I really saw a big improvment in my arrow flight using them.
Now if I could find another one.  I just changed my rest after probably 2-3 years of use.  I try and keep and extra, but they don't make this one any more.
If anyone has the wire type with the plastic tube on it I will buy it.  The adhesive part that goes on the bow, looks like a upside down funnel.  I don't rely on tha adhesive, but use some contact cement as well.

I used to use them back in the 70's, but after having 2 break on me I went back to the shelf. Murphy's law seems to follow me.

I use the Centerest flipper on my Gamemaster. Talk about perfect flight, my bare shafts fly like they have fletching. If it's raining I can also shoot vanes. I also carry a spare flipper head in my pack but I have never needed it.

Just works for me.....

I also use the Para brush rest on some of my bows , Slick , quiet & durable. They also never seem to wear out.

I use one on my Reflex Nomad.  Like Desert said, tack driving flight.  5" vanes almost shoot better than feathers.........almost LOL.  IMO hard to keep quiet though.

I started off using Hoyt flipper rest back in the mid 60's and most of the people I hunted and shot field rounds with used them also. Now that I'm getting back into recurves again I put a Pro Hoyt flipper rest back on. Never had one fail.

I just started using one and I'm very impressed with the great arrow flight. My buddy Steve O. hooked me up. I'll be in Alaska this year and expect to encounter a lot of rain. So we are looking to shoot vanes off the rest so we won't have to worry about wet feathers.

As far as the stick on flipper goes. Are you guys shooting the flipper with the stationary arm, or the arm that moves with the wire and clear coating on it?  Never tried one but just might try one on a recurve I have.

here is a like to one type of flipper rest. They may vary in design but all do the same thing. Provide better arrow clearance that shooting off the shelf, at least that is what some folks think.
