What does anyone recommend me to do with my cedars.
I have stained the crown and left the rest natural.
Should I crest first and then dip or dip the whole arrow first and then crest. What dip and cresting paint does you recommend.

There are many ways to do it, but my method is after staining first use steel wool to get rid of any excess stain, then dip in gasket laquer. For cresting I like Testors model paint, and then coat that with 2-3 coats of Minwax water based poly. Final step is two more dips in the gasket laquer. I've also had good results with ProFin Poly instead of the gasket laquer for a more water resistant finish.

Epoxy finish, craft/testors for cresting, spray paint for the cap.

I stain, crown, crest, then polly. Make sure everything is really dry between each step.

I put on 3 or 4 coats of polly (dry between coats) then sand and apply final coat of polly. Good luck and have fun. Alan

I do as the Whittler does. I second the Testors for cresting. I crown with Rustoleum. It has good color assortment and it is easy to find. I thin it down a little with paint thinner. After done with this I weigh the arrows. Someone here told me if you want to add about 8-10 gr. per arrow to get them the same weight, dip the lighter ones one more time without the gasket and hang them to drip dry. Tried it last night works great! All my arrows are now 526-528 gr. w/ field tips.

I like to use a wipe on poly before cresting. Seems like some times the crest lines bleed and are not as sharp as when they go over a coat of sealer. Then I add more coats of sealant usually shellac or a wipe on poly.

I stain, one coat wipe on poly, dip the crown, crest using paint markers by Testors, then 2 more coats of wipe on poly. Works good for me.

I really like the paint markers, no need to thin and no brushes to clean up. :D

Here's what I do. Stain, Amber shellac (wiped on ), cresting with testors from Walmart and wipe on latex satin poly.

Anyone ever used Helmsman Spar varnish and if so what glue do you use to attach the feathers. Just trying to use up some stuff around the house before I go out and buy new!!

Very glossy...thin it out with paint thinner and it will flow out better and kill some of the gloss as well.

Jon, I use it on all my arrows. I use Fletch-tite Platinum. I use the dip tube with the gasket system putting on 3 coats. The last coat I will just dip and hang and let it run off without the gasket. It provides a great finish and very durable and resistant to the elements.

I used to use Spar Urethane and Regular. Now I just use regular gloss. If I crown and crest, I put on 3-4 coats, Krylon spray crown, Testors crest, and Krylon Crystal Clear 2 coats over the color. Duco to fletch with. The trick is to let everything dry at least 24 hrs between coats.

After staining, I have dipped with a water based enamel (red devil I think)(for ease of clean up) and crested with model paints and then sprayed 2-3 coats of clear flat or satin polyurethane. Use Duco cement

I always use Helmsman Spar Urethane.

I fletch with the Saunders NPV glue.

Do you guys polyurethane the whole shaft before you crown dip and crest.

Yes, I dip the whole shaft to get an even finish. The shine from the Spar is great for a slick surface. I hear some like to wax their shafts, don't have to with Spar. If you are going hunting with them just knock the shine off with some steel wool.

Nel where do you get the Saunders NPV glue? I have switched to Duco and like it better than the Plat. Fletch-Tite.
