Question about cutting hickory
« on: March 20, 2010, 11:14:00 AM »
About to finish up an Osage bow hopefully this week and have been wanting to cut some hickory.
I know you need to wait until the sap starts moving so that the bark will peel off.
Question is, do you think it is too early to cut hickory in Indiana?  We've had some warm days and I've noticed just a few things beginning to grow buds.
Don't want to cut it too early though.

They are collecting maple sap for sugaring up here in NH so I would think that sap in other trees is moving as well.

I have always waited until the leaves were out before cutting. I have heard you can cut when leaves are 2/3 out but I usually wait a little longer.
