Day One ASAT Wool
« on: March 22, 2010, 04:15:00 PM »
I am looking at purchasing some Dayone ASAT Wool, but I wanted a few reviews from guys who have had the stuff for a couple of seasons. I have never owned any wool outer garments, so please excuse any of my ignorance.  Anyway, here are my questions:

Does the wool fade after a few seasons of use?

How well does the wool hold up to abuse? I hunt out of a treesaddle and I am worried about the knees and thighs rubbing against the tree and wearing the wool over time.

Windbarrier with or without insulation? Does the windbarrier inhibite the performance of the wool?

I have heard that tightly woven wool acts as a natural windbarrier.  How true is this?  It can get pretty brisk around here during the November rut.

How does the wool blend (80/20) compare to 100% virgin wool? What are the performance differences?

What about lining the wool? Will this negate the inherent properties of wool? I am mainly referring to wool's tendency to regulate overheating vs. getting cold and insulating properties even while soaked.

For a cold weather suit, do I have to at least line the wool with a wind barrier?

Thanks for you help, Jake

I have the wool asat parka and love it. I got wind block and insulataed and exchanged it for unlined. it was so warm that I didnt use it much so I got the unlined and just layer as needed. IF YOU HUNT REALLY COLD THEN GET THE LINED AND INSULATED. THE PRICES ARE GOOD ALSO IMO

Jake, Welcome to TG!

Right under the Sponsor banners there is a "search" function. Check that out and run a search in the Pow Wow forum for the words Day One. Lots of Day One stuff I am sure and you may run across other info. Good Luck!

I have heard that tightly woven wool acts as a natural windbarrier. How true is this? It can get pretty brisk around here during the November rut, ie windy and down into the teens.

What about lining the wool? Will this negate the inherent properties of wool? I am mainly referring to wool's tendency to regulate overheating vs. getting cold and insulating properties even while soaked.

For a cold weather suit, do I have to at least line the wool with a wind barrier?  I have reservations about lining the wool for noise, performance, etc.

Also, I have some first lite that I plan to use in warmer weather.

FYI, I tried the search function but did not read anything that answers my specific questions.

Thanks again, Jake

I don't have day one wool, but own many different brands of wool . I prefer to layer instead of a wind blocker due to the noise wind blocker makes . NEVER beleive someone if they say the windblocker does not make noise, I missed a shot at a  nice whitetail due to noise maker err wind blocker .

I have some Grey Wolf Predator, KOM grey, Cabela's Outfitter wool (when Pendleton made it), Columbia recycled wool in snow camo and Day One ASAT wool.

My Day One ASAT and my Cabela's are my go to outfits. The Cabela's for hunting more pine cover and the ASAT for more hardwoods. I have the ASAT bibs, pullover shirt, the crusher hat and the ski hat. I also had Gary custom make my over the shoulder bag in ASAT wool.

A friend of mine sold his KOM after getting his ASAT wool. Not that KOM isn't great stuff, it is. It's just that the Day One ASAT wool is not only great quality, but if you opt for camo over plaid, there just isn't anything that's like ASAT for making you melt into the background in a hardwoods setting.

My Cabela's is great stuff too. I don't know if Pendleton still makes it for them, but the old stuff was great quality. However, the green Outfitter camo does blob at any distance. Solid green as as good. I used it when hunting pines.

My Columbia snow is nothing special, but it is a great coverall for cold, snowy late season Michigan hunting.

Grey Wolf Predator wool camo speaks for itself. Great stuff. Super quality and the 2nd best camo pattern made, in my opinion.

KOM grey also speaks for itself and their grey camo is great, especially considering deer's mostly B/W eyesight.

In my situation, I hunt natural ground blinds made up like a giant eagles nest of branches and deadfall, with a few small openings for shots at the trails. With that mix in hardwoods/2nd growth poplar, ASAT wool makes it almost impossible to see any outline of anything even close to the human form.

If hunting short, thick pines in the same situation but using cut pines for the blind, I use my Cabela's wool in Outfitter/green.

the trouble with linings is exactly as you say, they change how the wool really is supposed to work. They don't get rid of water well or ventillate properly. In plain old woodlot hunting, who cares...just go back to the house. In the wilderness it can mean a lot. The liners hold water and don't breath well or dry out. Easier to layer as many have suggested. Day one wool is nice stuff, but for true outback hunting I would trust KOM a bit more. I have both and use them both a lot. The day one is a different fabric altogether than KOM. It doesn't appear to be virgin wool, and is a very tight, cotton like weave or mat. KOM is woven and breathes better, but is not as windproof. The day one has a waterproof coating on the wool to help repel water. I favor the asat camo, but it is hard now to justify the KOM prices...jeez they have come up

I really love the day one. I've had it for several years and it has not faded. If you areonly tree stand hunting the insulated is as warm as it gets. But if your going to be moving around some the insulated is probably to warm. I'am going to get a set made uninsulated for days I just still hunt. Probably I'll get the top alittle bigger to add some layers if needed. Awesome stuff!!!

I have a sizing question about the Day One ASAT wool.  I am looking at getting unlined parka and bibs.  According to the size charts, I should be a large for both.  Gary said I might think about ordering up to XL for both for layering purposes and for climbing up to my stand.  I am worried this might be a little too big on me, especially for bowhunting purposes.

I would like to have room for a couple of wool layers (first lite and Day One western shirt) for cold weather, but I also would like to wear the garment by itself for milder weather.

What say you?  I am 5-10, 180# with a 34" waist and 40" chest.

I am also looking at a wool western shirt.  According to the charts, I am a M or L.  Does anyone have any experience with the sizing on this?

Thanks, I really appreciate all the help.

Jake

I am 5'11 165-170 and have the large unlined parka and have plenty of room for layering (and like it a lot by the way).  I've wondered the same on the shirt as I would like it to fit a little tighter than the parka.  I think the shirt would be great for the milder weather.

I am a the same height and a tad heavier(196ish) and the Large bibs fit me pretty well (a little long in the legs)I have the saddlecloth pants in 34 inch waist and they fit perfect. Guess it is just a cut difference between the pants and bibs.

Hi all,

I would like to have your advice/expertise on the sizing of a Wool Parka for a close fit (unlined garments) for me and my brother.

I'm 5''10'' (5,83' or 178 cm) tall
Chest: 37,4'' - 38,18 ''
Sleeve: 33,07'' - 33,26''
Weight: 158 pounds

And my brother

5''10'' (5,7' or 174 cm) tall
Chest: 37,79'' - 39''
Sleeve: 32,67''
Weight: 156 pounds

We usually do spot and stalk and aren't often in a stand and will not put many layers under the parka.

What's the best for us: M or L ?
What's your own experience: does the Dayone Parka fit tend to be loose or tight ?

Thank you to share your experience.

Best
Francois

me too!!--dead quiet-8 yrds and the buck heard the wind-stopper at 3/4 draw-hell i heard it!!went right to the house and cut it out --and vowed never again--it doesn't make sense to stop the wind "after" it has passed through your insulation anyhow---day-one makes great stuff

Day On is great stuff. Started off w/ the wool  uninsulated parka and this has has been my most used piece. Also have the uninsulated wool pants which work great, but to move around much in them it needs to be no higher than the 40's. Also have the insulated wool parka which is great for really cold weather, but did not even get it out of the bag this past season in NC. As for the ASAT, all I can say is that it works great at breaking up your outline. Very well made stuff.
I have the large: 5'11", 42 chest, 175lb.
