String Length for a Youth Hickory Flat Bow?
«

Hey Everyone,
I picked up a little youth hickory flat bow for my 5 year old daughter. It does not have a string for it. I don't know much about all wood bows. It is 46 1/4" from nock to nock.
What string length do I go with for this type and length of bow?
What type of brace height should I start with when I do get a string for it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Bridog

I would get a string about 3" shorter, and with an all wood bow I would say a brace of 6" to 6&1/2" would be a good area to start with.

A 6in brace for a 46in all wood bow is too high. I'd go 4.5-4.75 for brace height. You need a 43-44in string. It might be best to build your own. Artificial sinew is good. It's about $8 from 3 rivers. It's a pretty big roll. Every strand is good up to 14 pounds of draw weight. Two strands will be plenty. Then get a serving tool and serving from three rivers. I recommend 0.026 crown serving or 0.030 diamondback serving. You can use the same materials for bow string for all your bows. The artificial sinew strands are pretty thick so they actually don't look super skinny on the bow. 6 strands is good for pretty much anything(84# or less).

Brian, if your still in need of a string, give me a holler. I have some pink, blue, yellow and red dacron, that would make apretty string for her.
Jesse is right about art. sinew and or you could use the braided drapery cord from the hardware, like some folks. But the Kids like to have them 2 color strings, "just like Dad's".
Let me know.
Good shootin,
Steve
