Bows cut past center
« on: March 27, 2010, 09:25:00 AM »
I've been back and forth with Dan at A&H Archery about a new ACS limbed longbow. Their bows are cut 3/16" past center. I like the idea, but probably don't know what I should know. I also saw somewhere here that bows cut past center are not allowed at some shoots. Center cut or past - pros and cons?

A big advantage to the bow being cut past center is that you can use a wide range of arrows out of them.  With just a thin sideplate the bow will need a much stiffer arrow than what is normal for a bow of that weight.  If your preferred arrows are somewhat weaker, or you get a smoking deal on some weaker spined arrows you can build the sideplate up to accomodate (within reason, of course).  Also helpful if you want to try an elevated rest, you'll have more room to adjust.

As far as shoots, I'm no help there hopefully someone will have some answers for you.  However, if the bow can't be cut past center I'd have to assume that it is some kind of traditonal "d" shape longbow class.  In that case the ACS probably wouldn't meet the other criteria either.  I'm sure someone will clear this up...Mike

Cut past center is all pros, no cons. It gives you a wider choise of arrows you can tune to the bow. It's easier to add to the strike plate than to have to s change arrows because they are to weak.

They are just more forgiving of spine and easier to tune.

As far as rules in a shoot, I have found they are all differant from shoot to shoot so I don't let that dicktate what bow I like to shoot. I just change to a differant class. I've shot my long bow in the recurve class because they didn't allow aluminum arrows, no big deal just shoot and have fun

The ACS-CX won't qualify for longbow class in some shoots.

Well heck, 3 pc longbows won't qualify for the longbow class at many shoots.  If it's the center cut thats the problem for rules it's real easy to build it out.

If the A&H is the bow you want, don't let rules at a few shoots be the deciding factor.

What's better for some is worse for others.
Really, some clubs have their different ideals and interpretations of trad and that all right by me.
Yellow Jacket Longbows (retired), Gerald, makes an excellent center shot longbow (cut past center)and his bows can shoot a wide variety of arrows. I have a difficult time with them as my brain is "tuned" for a "traditional" type bow shelf. It would be just a matter of shooting for awhile to bring my groups back to the left where they belong though. For me a center shot bow groups about a foot right at 20 yds. unless I make a conscious effort for it not too.
If center shot is good for you, go for it.
To me trad is longbow (self or lam) or recurve and wood arrows but there are so many variables that exist nothing really bothers me much except those horizontal things but if you get right down to it those things been around a whole lot longer than fiberglass and carbon.

Cut past = room to tune, lets one more easily tune the bow to the arrows they may already have on hand.
