Scent Elimination While Extended Hunting?

How do you guy/gals keep your scent down, while on an extended hunting trips where you are gathered around a campfire in the evening and so forth? I haven't figured out how to keep the wood smoke from soaking into everything I have while in camp.

Any tips and suggestions are appreciated as always.

Well you could buy 6 or 7 scent suits and change them every day.  Or, you could just hunt into the wind.  H

I'm not so sure wood smoke is not a cover scent, it seems to work on whitetails if you get in some oak leaf smoke or whatever kind is burning.
Now if you smell like bacon there maybe a problem

I never wear my hunting clothes by the fire. It only takes a minute to change and that can change your hunt outcome.

I bought a scent smoker this year, it uses smoke to nuetralize scent, i was amazed at how effective it was, you have to use hard wood to descent because it produces something that kills the  bacteria. I used to think the same thing and tried to avoid the campfire but have changed my mind, google scent smoker and read some of the reviews.

The Indians used smoke to cover scent.  The oils in the smoke kill bacteria that's why smoked meat does not spoil.

Smoke is a great cover scent . All that scent blocker stuff you can buy is just a waist of money.IMO.If you sweat like I do nothings going to help . Play the wind.

Funny to actually see this thread as i have been experimenting myself lately! I love to do high intensity workouts and work up a good sweat, but with it comes B.O.! I have been taking Chlorophyll tablets lately(found at GNC) with much success! Within a week or so i could notice(smell) the difference! Its kinda like a vegetarian diet i believe, but to test it totally i have done some workout without wearing any deodorant, and it does work, no smell to speak of! I just take a couple tablets in the morning with breakfast and thats it! Try it out, could be the ticket on a backcountry elk hunt! Sorry for giving out all the personal info!!!

Every time this subject comes up I can’t help but think of our hunter gatherer forefathers. With all due respect I would bet money that personal hygiene was not one of their top priorities. These guys lived and died by their hunting skills. Same as wolves, coyotes and other predators, there scent is probably no stronger than yours; they just know how to hunt. Using the wind to your advantage works, always has, always will and is the most reliable form of scent control you can use.

All the scent killers, cover scents and scent suits that I have tried work great, as long as you stay down wind.  I have a Zodiac shower and a Cabelas shower stall that I set up in elk camp every year (put my heat daddy inside).  But, it is really more because a hot shower feels good on sore muscles than scent control. (When they start making a hot tub that will fit in a saddle panter, I am buying one!) It does seem like women will visit camp more often if we shower every once in a while.

I too have used the Chlorphyll tablets for 15 years and swear by them. In my area the wind  swirls constantly from being close to the lake, hollers and creeks here, and I have had deer wind me, but be unable to identify me as a threat,due to the tabs, and other scent precautions. Hunt in the wind when possible, stupid not to, but when you cant do anything about it, use the ch. tabs, good scent control spray and clothes to your advantage. I have put a lot of venison in the freezer with these methods, that wouldnt have happened otherwise, and several were good bucks, all under 20 ydards. Use common sense and anything else that gives you a slight edge, I need all the help I can get, the game usually has the edge whereever I am concerned, hope this helps. The best way to keep your odor down in the back country is to watch your wind weather and powder bottle.  You are going to drive yourself nuts with an impossible task.  NO ONE can chase animals around the mountains and not sweat.  Use the wind to your advantage and "forget the ScentLok"   :D

I get a little closer to the fire on purpose.  I've even laid my clothes downwind of the fire during the night if I can rig up a no-dew situation.


My buddies do the same.  Campfire, and cow-paddies have been just as effective as everything else we've tried.

Ride the wind, hunt the wind, watch the wind, stay down wind.  I am going to have to try the chlorphyll tabs.

As mentioned several times above, you can't totally eliminate your scent.  What works for me to reduce the BO is to drink plenty of water and wipe my body down every night with unscented baby wipes. Unscented deoderant is helpful as well and if you really want to get after it, wipe your pits and groin area with isopropyl alcohol to kill the stink producing bacteria.  If it's convenient to take a bath, I do so when possible.  Hunting the wind is the single best thing you can do to stay undetected.

Sometimes I work the wind, then every once in a while I work the wind and on those very rare occasions I work the wind

I try to stay as clean and scent free as I can. I use silver clothing (underlayers and socks) and sprays but truth be told like I said I work the wind.

Chewing licorice or licorice gum and it will cover your breath scent; and that is source of scent...

When we are on long Canadian canoe trips, after  a week or so we notice two things. 1. When you scratch your head your fingers smell like toe.  2. If you are to a point that your fingers smell like toe the bugs cannot find you as easily.  If you smell bad enough, you can tell when you are not facing the wind.
