magnum tents spike camp any experience?
« on: April 07, 2010, 06:13:00 PM »
Kinda of a tipi style very light weight tent (20Lbs) that sleeps 3-4 and can handle a wood stove.  Anyone have experience with one?

Hunting was hazardous, but at least it guaranteed the freedom of the individual.

There is no doubt that the onset of farming saw the end of leasure for the majority of people, who were destined to toil in the fields.

Well calling it a spike camp tent is a bit misleading.  I'm not carrying a 25# tent into my spike camps.  LOL

It looks good though.  Might look at the Kafiru version too.  Might weigh a bit less.  I think John Havards 14 man is about 25#.

20# for that size tent with a vinyl floor sewn in and a stove jack installed is pretty light.

It is actually listed as 25 lbs.I'm not sure why weight would be a big issue with that type tent.25# will never be a back pack tent, more for vehicle or horse type camping.I guess a horse would appreciate the thought.

It might also help if flying in a light plane with weight restrictions.

I am familiar with the material and I would absolutely never have a tent made from it.

sndmn11,

Please explain your concerns with the material. When I came across this tent the price (pretty cheap) concerned me right away.

$369 isn't worth that tent and is no bargain...
First of all, that thing is not made in the USA, nor is it canvas.  That material is absolutely not breathable and is not intended to be used as a shelter fabric.  It is a material that is ridiculously cheap to manufacture and somebody overseas had the bright idea to make all sorts of things out of it and then give a gimmicky name to the material that helps market it for that specific purpose.  I have had a few dozen customers make the mistake of being misled by this and similar products, only to see them fail and end up buying a quality product in the end.

I would highly suggest the following:   http://cowboycamp.net/range_tents.html

He has videos now posted on the link of setting the tents up and you can get an 8'x8' for pretty darned cheap (treated canvas listed for $327.00).  The best part for me on these is they don't take all the ropes like in the one you had posted.  4 stakes for the corners and there's a really heavy nylon loop at the apex where you can tie a line and throw over a limb, or you can put a single pole in the center inside.  For truck camping, etc. you can do the exterior poles.  I bought a 12'x12' that has the screen door and window along with the awning.  Here it is in my backyard:

Have a buddy who cowboyed in AZ for a few years and pretty much lived out of one just like this for quite a while in all kinds of weather.  He swears by them and I borrowed his (about 9 years old) before buying mine.  And FYI, you can get one from the site listed with a stove pipe jacket, too.  Great quality on this tent-just my $.02
