North MO Lease weekly? Interested? ? Update 6/4
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:22:00 AM »
Hi Folks,
I have a landowner I have been leasing a small parcel from,(115 acres) he is wanting to retire and looking for a way to have a bit more income from the rest of their land.

There is 560 acres total, mostly row crops and draws,30 acres in pasture with  a cedar draw thru.(shot my biggest 150 yds from this)

Was wondering how much interest there would be in leasing to trad only bowhunters by the week(probably 4-5 max per week). Haven't decided on any pricing just yet,so if anyone has leased like this, would like to hear any pricing ideas.

Would probably price a bit higher in oct and nov., but season runs sep 15 to jan 15 with 11 days out for gun I believe.Of course you could buy a gun tag and hunt with trad, but will be one gun hunter in one parcel(their nephew)so it would be off limits.

Please express any interest and ideas,so I can see if this would fly.

Mods ,if this isn't OK,my apologies and delete.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Will do Vince!!

I might add, this would be a trad only lease with exception of their nephew during gun.

I will check on NR tag prices in a bit, gotta go help a neighbor burn CRP now.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I looked at Missouri last year, printed out a bunch of public ground to hunt and almost pulled the trigger then.

Before and after rut $500/hunter. $750/hunter Halloween until rifle season. Sounds good to me.    :D

Here are last years permit prices, raised last year,so I don't look for them to change again this year.

The $225 NR anydeer gets 2 deer,2 turkeys and small game,no furbearers.

Only 1 buck before gun season for archers.

   http://www.mdc.mo.gov/regs/permits.htm

This would be bringing your own stands. I might set a few ladder stands if there is enough interest.

I would mark boundaries, you would have to stay on the right place.

This buck came from the farm next to one of the parcels, there are some of these and since the 4 pt rule,a quite a few 100 to 130 inchers.

   http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=18;t=000045

The buck in my avatar came from bout a mile from another parcel.

Any more input?

Feel free to shoot me some ideas!
Stay sharp, Kenny.

500 - 750 a week - would that be for the group or per hunter?

This is a great opportunity, guys.  I started travelling out to NE MO last fall for November whitetails and if I didn't have access to a place myself I would seriously talk with Kenny about getting in on the ground floor of this deal.

From what I've seen, NE MO has some problems - particularly some poaching and a silly rifle season smack dead center in the rut - but it is still a great place to go if you can gain access to private land.

There are a lot of variables and you won't book 100 percent, but with 5 hunters per week for four months on 500 acres you are potentially putting a lot of hunting pressure on a small piece of property.  When you pay to have a week to hunt you hit it hard and hunt all day.  5 guys hunting hard each week will put more pressure on the place than 15 guys on the weekends with no time for the property to "rest". You need to plan/schedule breaks in the action.

Gregg, my thoughts exactly.
Kenny, if this is like the rest of north MO I am familiar with, too many crops, fields and pastures on 500 acres to hunt with more than 4 guys. And if you hunt it continuous you will run everything out or nocturnal. It has to rest more than it is hunted.

I've hunted in one of the best whitetail states and even in the best county in that state.. If you run too many hunters through it you are wasting your time and money.. I've watched yearling's and fork horn walk through the woods looking up into about every tree they pass..

I hunted this paradise in Kansas two seasons and did see some huge bucks the first trip,, but after the second I would not go back.. Too many bowhunters educating the deer..

My point is Kenny if you will not run too many bowhunters through your lease I would for sure be interested in coming...

Yep guys,I'm trying to factor all this in.

The best part is most folks will use a little different tactics, approach and stand sites.

The worst part is someone driving long distance to hunt and finding spooky deer.

Definitely don't want to overhunt it.

What do you guys think, week on , week off?

1 on , 2 off?

Lookin for ideas, thanks much for all input so far!

Kenny,

I don't know your whole "setup" with the lease.. But limit the number of hunters. Let them hunt only specific quality stands and ONLY hunt them in the correct winds...  A group (2,3,4)every two weeks sounds right unless the place is huge...
You should not educate the deer doing this.

If this is only about money the landowner will overhunt and in the long run lose money not having a quality bowhunting lease...

Is a late season doe only hunt available?  I am a trophy doe killer that loves deer management.. LOL
