Lovin' the recurve
« on: April 15, 2010, 09:00:00 PM »
I bought a Martin x-200 from Jack Shanks.  Accurately described, shipped quickly, life is good.
Took it to Rocky Mountain Specialty, bought a stringer, traded some field points for a heavier front end and voile, life is good.  I have been shooting my compound recently and decided to try the world of sticks.  I am digging it.
Form is coming along, need to continue to focus on pulling right hand straight back on the release so that my hand stays on my face after the arrow is released.
That seems to be my only flaw in shooting form thus far with a few guys from RMS giving me tips.
Any words of wisdom or tricks to keep it planted would be greatly appreciated.
Backyard is only 13 yds of shooting, but I am having fun.

Keep shooting the recurve and you might have so much fun, your compound might see less and less action until you no longer use the compound. I haven't shot my two Darton Maverick compound bows during the last 6 years.

You will have moments when you say " why did I do this " but don't look back your in for a great ride. I haven't shot a wheelie bow in 25 years and I love my stick bows.

The plan is 30-40  arrows per day for awhile, build muscle memory, see how it goes.  The wheelie bow is back in the case for at least a month, then we will see how much sunshine she sees.  In the meantime, let the stick do the flinging.
I definitely noticed some errant shots, but could identify why each one went astray.  Follow ups were on, shows I am learning and thinking to get the muscle memory right.
Need to keep that right hand stapled to my face on release, did a bunch of dry draws before heading in for the night, focusing on anchor and parallel back shoulder/upper arm with the arrow.
Looking forward to tomorrow.
One question, bow is rated at 52 @28, I am pulling 30.5-31.  I have heard anywhere from 1-4 lbs per extra inch of draw, any guidelines to use, I am not real worried about it, just trying to learn some.
Thanks

I came into this from firearms. When I look at compound bows, all I see is sights, etc. Then I think "for that price, I could get a .30-06". For some reason, when I see an expensive stickbow, I don't think of guns. There's just something visceral, and natural, about shooting a stickbow.

I'm in the same boat as you Jon.  Bought a recurve about a month ago, been shooting it as much as possible.  Just going and and shooting is alot more fun now.  Picked up the compound yesterday...way too heavy and clumsy.  I might be hooked.

I love tradition shooting (longbows and recurves).  Most important thing for me to remember is push-pull.  Pushing with the bow arm helps me the most of anything to hit the spot.  Of course pulling to a consistent anchor point is a must.  Best of luck and enjoy.

Hook'm'Deep for accuracy and deeper penetration.
Do a search on this forum and the shooting forum for "deep hook".
Welcome and enjoy the ride.

Welcome to the Recurve shooting ,, Recurves are the best to me any ways ,, Yes I own a long Bow but the recurve Lines and feel are hard not to love , plus most recurves are well Faster than Long Bows  ,, Many will tell you there r&d long bow is the fastest but they often refuse to shoot through a cronograph ,, WHATS UP WITH THAT!  Pick a spot is the way to shoot  good  luck and welcome to the world of trad archery   :archer2:

Thanks, Hot Hap and Bowtie for the tips and the weight question.  I will think more on push-pull, have a pretty good anchor.  I am sure 61 will do a number on deer and elk if'n I can get close enough and feel confident enough.
Gots to keep shootin'!!
