MD turkey journal:)(be back on monday :) !)
« on: April 19, 2010, 10:37:00 AM »
Well the time is upon us here in MD, time to get out and hunt them birds.  My buddy is hunting in the mornings before school, and I am going with him.  I have a bit more experience, so I help him out.  We set up the most redneck blind that could possibly be made.  It was a normal blind, but the poles inside were cheap.  About 20 yards of rope and some trees forming a square and we are in business.  He is having issues shooting from it, but after shooting from it yesterday he has it down, now all we need is some birds.  I am a fairly good caller, I have every type of call under the sun.  I use mouth and box calls to get them close then either mouth calls or slate calls to bring them closer.  But for some reason last night after I finished my college homework I couldnt find my diaphram calls    :knothead:    so we were a bit late, it was just light, but the sun wasnt actually up.
I showed up and he was setting up the decoy.  We hopped in and was getting situated when a gobble rang off across the creek.      :knothead:        :archer2:

Ill keep  ya guys posted throught the season:), figured it would be cool to write a little MD turkey journal for your veiwing pleasure, and hopefully there will be some media to go along with it(pics and videos).  Wish me luck

Thanks Chris.  I always enjoy your videos too.(hint hint)

Sounds like you are having fun.  I miss college for the same reason. Most days I could hunt the mornings and make it to class.
Relax,

It was our opener here in Missouri and I came away satisfied just getting to be there.

I had 3 half grown steers come up to about 10 yards of me, form sort of a semi-circle and stand there moon-eyeing me. I got up and tried to run them off without using any sound just waving my arms. I got them to run away but by the time I got back to my set-up they were back in their seats..lol my set up wasn't much one ecoy and a seat a small piece of camo material and my leafy suit.

I stuck around for awhile longer then went home changed bows and into some cooler clothes then back to the woods. It just wasn't the same though so my "stick to it" ran out around noon.

There's always tomorrow.......

God bless,Mudd

Thanks guys the cameras were rolling again this morning!

Day two was a bit more interesting.  In my previous post I mentioned that the mornon who is suppose to be the "veteran" turkey hunter was unable to find his mouth calls  :banghead:    :banghead:    "[dntthnk]"  .  So at least today we saw him.  There are a couple more around so he is definatly not the only fish in the pond, but it was driving me crazy because he was so close and yet soo far away!  I never got him on film, but I am pretty sure I got some gobbles!  Hopefully!?  Anyway, day two down the drain, but it was one step closer to a victory!!!  We got till the end of May to get it right, so wish us luck!

no hunting this morning, he didnt want to hunt the rain, and to be honest I was not going to complain about "sleeping in", lol.  But I leave tommorrow for 4 days in the mountains after those birds!  They are a different breed in my opinion.  They seem to be alot easier to coax, but alot harder to get a shot on!

I was looking over some of the footage from yesterday and I did get some cool audio even though I didnt actually get film of the gobblers, but it is still cool to get some gobbles on film!

Anyway wish me luck, no blind or gillie, so call me crazy, but I think I got it this year!

Well guys our trip was a bust.  Western Maryland got 289 inches of snow this winter  :scared:  , I didnt have a typo, that was alot of snow.  They had several feet of snow on the ground from christmas to feburary.  That is the only reason I can think of that the turkeys are down in numbers out there?  Here at home, a hour and a half away we only got 64 inches of snow, which is still crazy above average, but the turkeys here are extrememly high in numbers and hot and heavy right now.

Anyway, 4 days in the woods, not even seeing a bird, and only catching 3 fish total!!  No mushrooms, so it basically sucked, lol.  At least it was nice out and we were not at school or work.  So I am probably going to hit the woods thursday and see how it goes!
