Anyone just sharpening the new griz with a bastard file?
« on: April 20, 2010, 09:23:00 PM »
I'm what some would call 'sharpening challenged'.  I've tried a bunch of ways to sharpen them and have cut myself more on the file than on the broadheads.  I got frustrated the other day and just started rasping the heck out of one that was threaded onto a part of an old shaft, using a double cut file. The LW bevel really lets my natural motion of filing with my right hand dig in without loosening the broadhead. I'll be darned if I didn't keep a pretty good angle and raise a bur.  After I got the bur off it was pretty darn sharp.  Not as nice as some of my friends can get, but not too bad and something that I think I could reproduce in the field.

Started doing about the same thing. I've read the Ashby reports..great what the man has done.
But here's a thread from the past.

I looked at those heads you gave Mike.  The problem you're having is you're applying too much pressure and not keeping it even along the bevel as you pull it. Because the mill is not as aggressive as the curved tooth, it's not removing as much metal, which is why it appears to give a better result.  You can use just the mill file on the new ones that don't need the angle changed without too much grief but the Griz will still burn a mill out pretty quick.

I think you'll get it if you keep after it.

pdk25,
I am NO sharpening guru by no means but...

I have the new 200 Grizz and use a dull bastard file, ceramic stick and cardboard.

I start by pulling the file down the angle usually from tip to back getting a small burr.  Then fine tune it with the ceramic stick and polish it a bit on the cardboard.

For the tips I like to lay the flat side of the tip on the file and drag it down a few times to sharpen it in the direction of the other blades instead of the perpendicular tip that it comes with (if that makes sense).

The new ones are much easier than the older ones and I only loose 2 grains in the process.

Hi Pat,

A couple years back I bought some Grizly heads that I filed down to a pretty good angle and then went to work on them with my KME knife sharpener. I got the heads nice and sharp. Last year I bought some 190 El Grande Grizleys from Ron at KME that he sharpened for me. Those were way sharper than the ones I had sharpened. I know those Grizly heads are pretty time consuming to get that angle put into them. Give Ron at KME a call to see if he could hook you up with his sharpened heads.

I hope to see you and Ron this weekend at Whittingham. Hope that you are well.

I stink at sharpening .So the way I do it is buy new heads every year.now I have about 30 heads that need sharpening.so I thought its time to start.Iwill be useing a file as well. there are easier ways an better ways.but this way is cost effective.

Patrick,

Bring them with you to Whittingham this weekend and we'll figure it out.
