How many turkey head shooters?
« on: April 21, 2010, 06:01:00 PM »
Just curious how many folks are hunting turkeys with bullheads or guillotines?  Shooting magnus bullheads has certainly boosted my turkey hunting confidence big time with a bow.  I can't help but focus intently on a turkey's head when it comes in which makes it easy for me to thump them in the head/neck with the bullhead and they are down.  I never would have guessed that but I'm glad a buddy of mine talked me into it.

I do.  I use a ghillie suit and see the head best. I aim right below the head and the birds go down.  No chasing them around the woods.

I tagged my first trad bird today and took him with a bullhead. Not the best bird I've taken overall but the best bird I've taken equipment wise.
He was a scroungy dude. Only had one primary tail feather and looked like he had the fire whooped out of him. Had a toe that was about cut off too, just hanging on by a piece of skin and when I went to breast him out I noticed his skin was green. Cut him open and it was a nasty pussie mess. No meat off this bird, Guess it was a Mercy killin LOL

I have been shooting Bullheads for a couple years and love'em.  The kill zone is the same size and at least I can see it.  I tried the guillotines first (don't think bullheads were out yet), I never did get 'em to fly very well.  The bullheads fly great for me.  (I killed a gobbler at 40 yds with a compound 2 years ago body shot)and have had good luck lopping heads off on 10-15yd shots with my recurves. With my recurves I am shooting a GoldTip 55-75@32" with a 3 grain per inch weight tube and 50 grains of brass behind the 100g head so that I can shoot in the body if need be. 588g arrow 5" left wing shields.  Don't forget to turn the blades around for left wing fletch.

I just killed my first with a Woodsman last week But I saw how the bullheads worked and next time I go, I'll be using them. Overall I think you have a better chance of scoring. The other plus is either a dead bird or a miss.
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

I think there needs to be clarification with these broadheads.  They are really not intended to be shot at the head, but rather at the neck to take the head OFF.

Shooting at the head will not always do the trick as was illustrated by zipper bowss' video.  Not digging on the vid, it was great, just my two cents for what its worth.

I personally have not used them, but definatly see their worth, and they have proven themselves as effective.  Big snuffers have always done well for me.

Over&Under is right! If you watch my video you will see what CAN happen,if you shoot for the head instead of the neck.I have shot 2 in the head/neck area.I can tell you from now on I will be shooting just above the waddles.

I was surprised that the Tom I shot this year with a big Snuffer had at least 6" of the nock end of the arrow showing.  Of course, it was a quartering to shot that took out the entire wing root.
