Anyone like to help with arrow selection?
« on: April 27, 2010, 06:38:00 PM »
I wish I had a trad shop close by so I could take my arrow issues there, but since I don't, I will lean on your expertise.

I have done some trading and now have a Quillian Canebrake, so now I need to work up some arrows.  Bow- 62" 60@28. I draw around 31.5 (gonna have my wife measure me on this new bow tonight). I haven't put it on a scale since I don't have one, but adding 3# per inch of draw that puts it around 69# at 31.5.

I would like to shoot a heavier head, minimum of 175gr. I have played around with Stu Miller's calculator but never seem to have much luck with it. I would like to shoot carbons as well.

I appreciate the help I get here, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction on this one.

Thanks,
Jethro

I've heard the Canebrake like a heavy arrow.
Possibly Don Stokes will see this and chimn in.
If that draw length proves to be accurate you may need full tree limbs, RR track spikes, and whole turkey feathers

Jethro,
That's a heavy set-up,  much heavier than I'm used to dealing with.  Stu's calculator worked like a charm for my son and I and recommended different shafts than Easton's traditional chart did. I would definitelly weigh the bow. My favorite new tool is a digital bow scale by Easton. At $150 it is salty but wow is it precise. I recently weighed a bow marked at 50#s at 29 inchs (I know normal mark would be at 28"). I scaled the bow. It is 50.8 pounds at 28 inches and 45.2 pounds at 26 inches. I love the bow (Blacktail Elite VL) but the maker thought it would be only 41 pounds at my 26" draw weight. Since then I've weighed all my bows at 28" and 26". All are close but none are exact. Most of my bows only lose 2.5 pounds/inch from 28 to 26 inches. The rule of thumb 3 pounds per inch added or removed is just an estimate.

Apologize for the joke, but am estimating you'll need minimum 85-90# spine with the 175 up front.
I didn't use the calculator but someone will that understands it better than I do.
Congrats on a nice bow.

Ok, I had my wife measure my draw and I am at 30 3/4 for this bow.

Where would I find a carbon that is 85#+? I see that the Grizzly Stik Safari's are in that range, any other ones come to mind?

Jethro,
I am shooting 71@31.  Not exactly like yours but kinda close.
I am having very good success with Gold Tip Ultralight 300.
I am also using 570 gr. up front so they should work for you.

From what I have read Richie Nell has really done his homework when it comes to arrows.  The class. ads here are a good place to get some test arrows. 75/95 may also work for you, I really like Gold Tips

I shoot the same bow and #s and they are measured at 26 not 28". I shoot 2020 legacy at 30" with 250 grain woodsmen. I have also shoot goldtip leaving them longer. Hope you enjoy the bow Greg

If you are looking at getting some carbons here are a few choices.  Arrow Dynamic Traditionals, Gold Tip 55/75's, or CX Heritage 250's.

Right now I am shooting GT trads 75/95, 32" with 225gr up front, footed and 4x4 fletching. I did some bareshafting yesterday and only had time to set my nock height, but all in all they didn't fly bad...grouped well. I also have good flight out to 25 yrds. What little bareshafting I did showed them weak, but not terrible.

I think I could go down in point weight and get them to spine right, but as they are now these arrows are right at 9gpi...dropping them would put me under this and I am not comfortable with that.

I have read about filling the shaft with thin cotton rope or weed wacker line. Would that be an option for this arrow maybe?
