Adding movement to Decoys
« on: April 30, 2010, 12:32:00 PM »
I have been doing great on turkeys with my current set up, but i believe that if my decoy had some more movement a few birds that hung up would have come in. I'm using an inflatable decoy from Cherokee Sports. It swivels in even a slight breeze when using the thin side of the stake and stays put when using the thick side in heavier wind. The downside is sometimes a breeze doesn't come along when you need it and you still want some movement even when it's windy. I have been using a Turkey skinz and that helps with the feathers rustling a bit. Anyway i wanted to add movement that I could control.

I was looking in the basement and saw a display board full of springs, something like you would see in a hardware store with the model numbers under each spring. It was in the house when we moved in and I thought it may come in handy some day.....it did today.

I played with different springs until I found one that was stiff enough and the decoy stakes would fit into. I was surprised at how stiff it needed to be. The stakes were loose inside the spring so I used electric tape to make the stakes tight. I then wrapped tape around the spring so it wasn't shiny. I also added a small loop of bowfishing line to the spring so I can tie on some  mono fishing line. It works great, when I leave her on the side of the stake that spins, a little tug is all that is needed to get her to rock back and forth and turn around a bit. Even with the other side of the stake I can add some bobbing movement on windy days without having to worry she'll spin like a top.

I'll let you know how it works after some real tests!
