An old timer once told me ..........

"within reason, it's o.k. to leave em strung. More bows are ruined by stringing and unstringing them." So, Ive got this awesome little Kmag, 1972 45# @ 28" ....bow is nothing short of mint. Ive have been on average shooting somewhere around 400 arrows a week with it. The bow shoots awesome! I leave it strung because whenever I get the chance, I put the target out at the end of the family room (if the weather is bad) and send a few dozen. My question is what do you people think about what the old timer told me? Should I be leaving it strung so long as it's not in a storage/stand-bye state? It hangs on a nice rack in between shooting sessions.....

I have some strung that I don't shoot anywhere near that much, and they are fine.

I have a late '60's K-Mag and leave it strung unless I know it will be a week or more before I shoot again. I've had it going on 2 years now and no problems what-so-ever.

I have a new bow coming several months from now, so maybe then I'll slow down with the Kmag a little ....but I love that little bow. Just looking for experience and educated opinions!

I've heard of bows staying strung for 30-40 years without issues.

I have 8 hanging on the wall that are left strung at all times. I actually shoot them more because they are strung and I know they need to go out for a walk.
I have 5 that are hanging left unstrung. I shoot them only occassionaly.
The 1 osage selfbow I string and unstring because I've been told that the unbacked bows can develop some unwanted set if not relieved of stress after shooting.
My comments are opinions recieved and adhered to because I trust the judgement of those who've given me advice.

I understand that it's ok for recurves but not so good for a longbow. I leave my recurves that I shoot regularly strung, otherwise I unstring them. I have left longbows which I shot every day or so strung and so far, no bad effects on either.
If you ask a store or a bowyer, they will say to unstring them. And it's true that many bows get messed up stringing and unstringing especially if you don't use a stringer.

Whichever bow I am shooting is never unstrung until I switch out bows or pack to get on a plane...
I do hang the bow by the string horizontally on my bow rack..

I leave the bow I'm using most strung.
Leave the bow I'm not using so much strung as well,,,,,shoot em' both at lest,,,everyday,,,,just shoot less arrows from the longbow is all.

I leave my bow unstrung, though I shoot it a lot. To prevent damage, I always use a bowstringer to string and unstring it.

I've only had one problem with leaving a glass laminated bow strung. I had a bow that was in the shop(controlled atmosphere) and the glue gave up near the tip.
I was devastated when I walked in one day to find a ruined bow. It laid around for a few years until a friend (Butch) asked me why I didn't at least try to fix it. I had been told it was a lost cause.
Long story short, Butch took it home and glued it up, Thank you Butch. Once I got it home I decided to wrap both tips for an extra measure of safety. It hasn't had any negative effects on the bows shooting and is still flinging arrows as if it never happened.
God bless,Mudd
PS: I still leave my glass backed bows strung for the most part. I never leave my selfbows strung when not being shot or hunted.

On occasion I'll leave one of my recurves strung if I plan to shoot it the next day or so but other wise I'll unstring em & hang em on the wall or fully disassemble em "Take Downs" & put them away for another day.

So maybe the old timer was also wise ....(no shocker there!) as it seems many of you guys leave em strung up with no ill effects. Sounds good to me! Thanks for the insight everyone!

I leave bows strung for weeks with no problem. My only warning is never leave them strung if there going to be in excessive heat. Had a friend come back to his car and find his K-mag limbs twisted bad.

I had a flemish twist string come apart from leaving the bow strung. It didn't hurt the bow but I wont leave them strung any more.
