A walk in the woods
« on: May 08, 2010, 12:18:00 PM »
My buddy told me that he had been seeing game fairly regularly on a piece of public property not far from the house so I decided to take my new camera and see what I could see. I was expecting to see some deer and turkeys, but I was hoping I might get a glimpse of a bear since they frequent the property as well.

Monday after work I parked at the designated parking area and eased down a grass cut road with my new camera in hand. I had come straight from work and was still in my shirt, pants and dress shoes, sans tie. I had barely made it 300 yards down the road when I heard sticks breaking in the woods to my right. I stopped and listened, but didn't hear anything more. I was just about to start walking again when I heard more sticks breaking. I said to myself, "That's a bear!"

I eased off of the grass road and tried to peer through the thick growth near the road. I could see that it opened up within about ten yards. I found a game trail and slipped into the woods. After it thinned out I stopped and looked around slowly. It took me a second to realize that I was looking at a bear 30 yards away. He was looking at me too! I eased the camera up and snapped 5 quick pictures before he departed the premises.

Unfortunately, the camera was on auto focus and there was a lot of junk between us, but I still got a little memento of the encounter.

Thanks, guys!

Renee just bought me the Nikon D5000 for my 40th birthday.  My birthday isn't actually until the 16th, but Best Buy had a great deal last weekend.  She spoils me.

I got a 18-55 and a 80-300 (might be 70-300).  I need to get something in the middle too.  Maybe Christmas if I am good!

I had only had the camera for one day when I got this shot.

Nice camera. I had the biggest buck I had ever seen in front of me and took some shots. That's when I ran into the autofocus syndrome. When you are looking at all that antler, the viewfinder loses its impact...

Happy B-day a few days early bro.  Enjoyed the picture.  You going to make it to JC's this year.  We would love to have all of you up to shoot but I know it sure is a long way.

OO that autofocus!!!  I hardly ever use it anymore and my current cameras manual focus is Extremely hard to use  :( !  Seems to always focus on the foreground when you dont want it too and the background when you want the foreground.  BUTTTTTTT, with all that said, I still really like the picture!  Kinda a loomy type vibe, cool!

Thanks for sharing Gregg. That is something I need to work on. I ususally depend on brother DW to take the pics when we are out and about and he does a great job ! However, I am missing lots of memories I need to be getting on film. Note to self..... get a better camera and get to taking good pics like Mr. Dudley and DW !!!
