Slipping Arrows
« on: May 08, 2010, 03:50:00 PM »
I have a Great Northern ADjustable strap on bow quiver. At the 3D shoot today, I had 2017 aluminum shafts in the quiver and noticed they kept slipping down. Is this because the grippers are worn (they look like new) or do I need a different size gripper?

thanks
sam

Probably need a smaller size if it's not worn out.

Sam go to a local hardware store and buy some soft flexible latex tubing. You can cut into tiny pieces and slip over the holders.

Did you mean to say 2117 or perhaps 2016 or 2018? I've never heard of a 2017. If quiver has been carrying large diameter wood arrows, then I can see how 5/16" dia. aluminum might fit loose.

This is one of the reasons I don't use strap on quivers anymore, if possible.  If your bow doesn't have limb bolts, try a  Safari Tuff side quiver, they are excellent.

Thanks guys
The tubing sounds like an interesting fix. Arrows were EAston 2016. Thanks for checking that too.

I like the bowquiver and have others which don't slip, like the Selway. That of course has 2 sets of holes for wood and alum which work great.

I Have a side stalker which I like but not for hunting or 3D. I don't need to shoot a lot of arrows for hunting, etc. Usually lucky to get one shot.

black widow sells some wide "rubber bands" to fix this. Here is a web address...

Good luck

I'll check out the bands. Neat idea like the tubing but less work. Might just fix the whole problem

Thanks

"Rubber bands" look like a great fix, will have to try it, carbons keep slipping in my new thunderhorn.

Great Northern makes 3 different size arrow grippers. I think they are around $15 bucks each:

Large Gripper Fits: 11/32" and 23/64" wood arrows and aluminum sizes 2117 and up.

Medium Gripper Fits: 5/16" wood and carbon arrows and aluminum arrows up to 2020.

Small Gripper Fits: Easton Archery's Axis Series, The Beman MFX's, and ultra-thin carbon arrows.

My guess is you have the large gripper, which is the standard size that comes with a new quiver, unless you specify a smaller one when ordering a quiver from Great Northern. With 2017's you would need a medium.

I'm not sure what they're called..or even used for!, but my wife had some really small brown rubber bands with her make-up gear.  I put a few on each gripper of my lynx and my mfx shafts don't slip anymore. I haven't looked but they probably have them at any drug store, walmart, etc for a couple bucks.

How do you get them to stay in the gripper?
Maybe I should just get the smaller gripper?

Take a look at the pic in the Black widow link, band just slips over one side of the gripper, makes the openining a bit smaller, but end stays same size, and close's around shaft, simple but solid fix.
