"V" notch treestand....?
« on: May 15, 2010, 07:18:00 PM »
I found a perfect honeyhole today and do not want to advertise it by hanging a stand.  A multi trunked Oak is close and a wedge type platform to stand on will work perfectly.

Are the V notch "wedge in place" type stand platforms still being made?  I remember seeing one years ago and I think it was hinged in the center with prongs that bit into the tree on both sides....

Any help will help..

Search the web.  There are still a few out there.

Before the wide spread use of hanging stands, we used to make our own using a 2 X 12 and notching the ends ourselves.  We would spray paint the sides and bottom in order to give it a camo look from underneath.  Once wedged in place they were tough to nock out.

I think Ted Lawson might have made them years ago, but I haven't seen one in a long time. Maybe someone else will pitch in on this one, but didn't Paul Brunners Screaming Eagle company market one for a little while?

John III, I have one of the old original Bear River Crotch stands.  This is the kind that goes in the "V" of a tree or between 2 trees that are close together.  If you are interested in it drop me a PM.

I tried "google" and everything else to find these on line... No luck....

I have a strap on tree seat that I will use when standing on my homemade 2x12 wedged into place... LOL

My Dad still has his "tree wedge" he used in the early 70's...  I used to laugh at the thought of using one.. Funny how time seems to change ones mind.  Even on my private ground I an not going to advertise a good funnel.  Too many gun hunters that don't care about line fences come the third week each November...

This will work out fine. Camo painting them is a great idea..!

Thanks all for the help.

Please be careful using those style of tree stands. I can tell you from experience that the wind can reek havoc on you and it doesn't take as much wind as one might think to wiggle a tree trunk. That's about all it takes to drop one out of a tree.

I know, you're supposed to careful at all times but these are particularly hazardous.(IMHO)

I still have one of those old hinge stands but I never liked it much because it would make noise when I shifted my weight.  The 2x12 will be alot quieter.

If you choose your tree wisely and install the crotch stand properly they are solid and quiet.
They certainly won't work in every setup, but then what will.
The only thing I didn't like about mine is I thought the spikes were too close together and lets it wiggle and work loose.
I was always going to remove them and drill holes for pointed bolts so I could put the spikes where the tree needed then to be.

why not just hang a hang on? might be more comfy. one of the ones that remove real easy,, where the hanger stays on the tree.. i think that would be safer...my 2.5 cents

I use my Tree Saddle in spots like you describe. No worry about falling out of the tree either.

I've never used one, but Screaming Eagle did make one. They may be still advailable. I have a buddy who has one. I don't think he has ever used it that much. I'll check with him and see if he would be willing to sell it, should you be interested.

It's the "Lawson Wedge". I have one that I use once in every other Blue Moon--would you like to see a photo? Maybe you'd like to trade for it?
