Touching up my Snuffers...
«

So I decided to give some Snuffers a try. I began the sharpening proccess by using the sharpie and bastard file method posted on this site, and now have them all gleeming. I then used a ceramic stick to remove the burr. The result is a Snuffer that easily cuts elastic and grabs my fingernail, but is just shy of shaving hair. What else can I do to give them that extra edge?

I like to use a piece of leather with jewelers rouge. Pull across very lightly getting 2 edges at a time. Even with a file I can get it to pop hair just by getting my strokes lighter and lighter with each pass. The final few strokes are just the weight of the file.

I finish on the leather strop as well. Search for sharpening snuffers and my handle in the member name in powwow and you should get a pictoral I did a while back on sharpening Snuffers. Shows the stropping.

A little off topic but about snuffers. Where do ya'll find a mill file wide enough for the 160's?

I'm using them on my bear hunt next week...use a 10 mil file, ceramic stick and finish off on stropping leather. Popping hairs off my arm.....
I find the 10 mil bastard file very effective in getting them to the point of sharp but they need to be finished off. Some Snuffers I find will not shave hair but are still sharp enough to kill.

String bean,,I use two straight files side by side for that reason.
I also push into the file rather than away from it.
It's only on the last few "very light" strokes I pull the head down the file to clean it up.

I use just a file on my 160's. I work the file from back to front, 2 blades at a time. Ending in very, very light pressure.
For my 160's I use a 16" single cut bastard file.
On a side not I just found a box of brand new Nicholson files at a garage sale, $3 per file, with handles!

If you do not have a file, a 3-way JEWELSTIK will put a very nice edge on a SNUFFER broadhead going coarse to fine with lighter and lighter strokes. I *always* strop the edges with leather to get the *final* edge....
Shoot straight, Shinken
