when I was in the army I used sulfur powder.It kills the chiggers like crazy but its messy to use.Not so bad though when you place it in the top of your socks and its very cheap to buy at any drug store.A friend of mine uses flea collars on the top of his boots but not against his skin and swears by them.He tells me it really works and there's never a mess.I am gonna try it this fall.

No worries Doc! I guess a benefit would be if you loose a finger you might be able to grow a new one. It might not be on your hand, but hey, no big deal.

The sulfer powder does work pretty good. I keep mine in an old tube sock and use it to dust the tops of my boots and pant legs. It keeps the chiggers off and slows down the ticks.

I also use a set of elastic pant cuff gaiters. Basically two elastic tubes I pull up to the top of my boots and tuck my pant legs into. In my experience, ticks and chiggers require both chemical and mechanical intervention to keep ALL of them off.

Ok so far my none genetic code altering options seem to be bug skinz or sulfur powder and rubber bands? haha

I don't know about yah but I often hit the deck when hunting so full body protections is a must

While we're on the bug hatin' topic, has anyone tried mosquito soap? How bout the L.L. Bean clothing with bug repellent embeded into the fabric.

bug skins do not work for skeeters. at least they dont in aneast texas swamp. thermacell is great, if the wind is not blowing

I use deep woods off sprayed from the knee down and around my belt line. . Then a t cell for skeeters. Yellow flies bite no matter what during fly season.RC

Permanone is a Southern staple for chiggers and ticks. Very effective. For mosquitos I use a bug suit, face mask and gloves. Around the eyes, the only exposed area on my body, I use a repellant called Natural Causes. It contains Cedar oil, Citronello, Geranium oil, Lemongrass and a bunch of other natural things. It has a vegetable odor but not a chemical smell. It works well. Sometimes, I also use the Therma Cell. Overkill? No, there is no such thing as overkill. You either have a bug problem or you don't. By the way did I mention I hate bugs?

I use gaiters (sp) that I bought several years ago that were made by buckwing.  They are made of a stretchy material that is kind of like an elbow brace.  Works well for keeping chiggers, ticks, redbugs etc from crawling up my pant leg.

Avon "Skin so soft" lotion is the bees knees. Used it in service in the desert.

FWIW...I hate bug BITES! Guess cause of all the danged allergies, but I swell up something awful at a bug bite site and it STAYS swollen and itches like fire for 2 weeks. Chiggers? Had em last year and didn' know you could get em in PA! I about scratched myself raw  :scared:    :eek:  

Been using the permanone spray for years.  I find that by laying out my clothes, spraying till damp, my full head covering, hat, gloves, shirts, pants, socks...and letting them line dry and air 24 hrs...

.... ready? I don't even get bothered by skeeters! Hunted Blackwater Refuge for sika on Md's E. shore... and they were everywhere...but would dive in and back off...kinda neat... that was before T-cell came to live at my house!

Had that same "hover but don't land" experience with skeets for many years. And I'm the guy at a cookout who gets bit when nobody is being bothered...so yeah, I'm kinda a huge fan of permanone!

Really havnt stressed em, chiggies, here in the past few years and in eastern NC they can be rough. seed ticks can be a pain - turn white socks brown! I keep my trousers tucked away in my socks covered by a knee boot - seems to be a big help.
Thermacell is awesome on the skeeters.
