taper and finish b4 hot gluing?
« on: May 25, 2010, 04:57:00 PM »
I want to taper and finish my wood arrows with Helsmsman spar urathane and will be using hot melt, will it stick good if I do it this way? In the past I've been tapering after finishing then but there is a area after the taper that isn't finished. I really hope that I can do it (Hot melt the points on after the finish is on. ??? thx

Buckwheat, I've done it both ways without any real issues, but I do believe the hot melt sticks to bare wood better than poly.  It does help to sand or scrape off some of the taper finish.  Another option is to put some finish on the bare area after you glue on the points.

The Spar finishes work OK, but are formulated to have some flexibility to allow the wood to move with climate changes and therefore are softer than the regular polyurethanes like Minwax Fast Dry or Zar brand.
