Good speed with a 40# Black Douglas recurve
« on: June 01, 2010, 05:04:00 PM »
Hi!
I did some testing today with two of my bows!

I am a lucky owner of a Black Douglas hex 5 w core 66" [email protected] and a Black Widow pma 62" [email protected]

So today I decided to test them up against each other with a chrono.
Both bows are excellent shoothers with a smooth draw and all the things I like with a bow.

Reason I did the test is that it seems like the light BD is as fast as my heavier BW bow.

I used two Easton fmj with 3X4" feathers

1 arrow weight 494 grains
2 arrow weight 521 grains

The Black Douglas delivered following speeds:
1 arrow 494 gr = 171 fps
2 arrow 521 gr = 165 fps

The Black Widow delivered following speeds:
1 arrow 494 gr = 172 fps
2 arrow 521 gr = 166 fps

So both bows delivered almost the same speed!!
I did shoot 10 arrows with each bow and used the average fps.

This tells me that if you have some shoulder issues and need a light bow, then the Black Douglas is high recommendable!

Of course this is a test done without so much fuzz, It`s just me alone in my backyard but it gives you an idea of what the BD with hex 5  limbs can give you in benefit with a lighter set up.

And on top of that: Sid at Border bows is a really nice bowyer to do business with! He takes the time to speak with you whenever you call!

Of course the Black Widow people is in the same league      :)      But if you need a fast light poundage bow I will highly recommend Border Bows and the Black Douglas
With a healthy dose of madness and bad memory, life`s a wonderful journey

Yep, my Black Douglas at 46# with the hex 4's shoots the same speed as my 52# Great Plains SR Swift recurve with the same arrow.

8 pounds less with the same speed is real impressive.

My 62" 53# at 28" Border Black Douglas with Hex IV limbs is freakishly fast. Much faster than my BW PSAX.

The only thing that compares is my Centaur Carbon Elite and Jack Kempf Kwyk Styk.

Sid is working on Longbow limbs for the BBD. Yeehawwwwww!

Yes I think so to!

And the best part is that the bow is really nice without any kind of handshock!

Just was talking about this with a buddy from here. With Technology and matched arrows, you really dont need big weight bows. Why not shoot more and more accurately?

Charlie,

The only thing I wish my Border has is 80# limbs. That would be awesome!

Borders are definitely my favorite recurve. My Border GL longbow is fast too-nearly as fast as my Border with the "old" XP30 limbs!

Mathew, what are you trying to do? that sounds dangerous. I bet at that weight your arrow will reach deer in the future

That's why I don't like using lbs of pull to say this many lb is good to hunt this but that many is not there is more to it than just lbs of pull. I will have to look at there bows if I am ever in the market again.   Widow

Same thing happened to me, #50 BW MAIII shot the same speed as my #43 Whippen Stick.  So I figured? why shot the extra #7, same results!

This should also be interesting for the people who hunts the big game like the water buffalo!

The ph`s recommend a minimum of 70# bow and if these numbers add up at the heavier bows like I believe they will, then you actually could hunt the big game with a 60-63# BD or similar and still get inside the recommended weight!!

I guess my shoulders would thank me  :D
