What year is this Bear?
« on: June 08, 2010, 06:26:00 PM »
I believe this is a 1959 or 1960 Kodiak.
Can anyone tell me for sure what the year is?

This is the first one of these I have ever had.
Does anyone have any experience with the value of a bow like this?
It is only 36lb. Limbs are straight.
The bow is not for sale, I plan to put it into a shadow box for display, but I would like to know the value.

I believe values are hard to pin down on a specific bow like that, but the values seem to be comparable to the '59.  Condition of the bow makes the most difference. Rarity does have an effect, and for some reason, the '60 is not that common on the auction sites or classifieds.

Personally, I put the '60 at the top of my great shooting Bear bows, and maybe one reason we do not see them very often.

It does appear to be a '60 Kodiak.

Check with Droptine59 (Rich).  Since it appears to be original, he may be able to give you a ball-park range of value.  There are quite a few other members here that have a stash of these.  I know I've seen a wide variety of prices asked and seen an even wider range of prices paid on the various sites/auctions.

Regardless, a great bow.....one of the best out of Grayling!

This bow has a coin, so I believe it is a 1959.

Ref pictures of the bow strung-The string with this bow is very old, so I can't string it right now, need a new string, don't want to change damage with old string breaking.

Ok experts, if an insurance man ask me for the value of this bow, what do I say?
Not looking to inflate the value for insurance purposes, just want a honest and fair opinion of the value.

Check with the guys over in the Trad History/Collecting section. I'll let someone else put a value to it but "Bowdoc" has a really good thread over there that I have used myself to bring back youth into an old bow if you wanna give it a try.

That is a 1960.

An insurance man would want a real appraisal.  There are very few qualified to do that.  Wade Phillips is one of them.
