Carbon Arrows For my Longbow
« on: June 11, 2010, 06:11:00 PM »
I am thinking of shooting carbons out of my custom longbow. Have never shot carbon arrows so, I am seeking advice on which one I should try. My bow is 66in, 37lbs @ 37lbs. My draw is 29.5 and I am pulling 39lbs. The bow is cut 1/8 in past center and I use an 8 strand 8125 Ff string. Any help would be appreciated.

Gold tip 35/55

Any of the 600 spine carbon arrows cut about 31 inches long with a 125 grain fieldpoint will put you in the ball park.  This is according to Stu Millers calculator. Maybe some of the "40lb" shooters will jump in and give you some feed back on their carbon setups.  Good luck!    :)   And a 35/55 cut 31 inches with a 50grain insert weight with a 125gr fieldpoint would put you there also.

Actually if you can find them the 15-35 Gold Tip shafts will work if you don't want a heavy tip. They are spined .600

The 35-55 will work but most carbons like a heavy point and are usually spined higher than listed.

They do make some 700 spine carbons search around on the web to see if they might match up.

I have been shooting Beeman Youth Hunters out of my Robertson longbow and they are flying good. The problem is they are only 29 inches. I have the archery shop refletch them with feathers, cost is pretty reasonable. Will only work for lighter weight bows and us with a short draw.

I sometimes play around with an old Shakespeare Ocala, it's 35+@28 inches.  My draw is 29 inches.
I shoot GT 1535 Trads 30 inches long with 150 grain points and these arrows bareshaft and fly great.
The 1535 is a .600 spine arrow.

I'd also suggest a .600 since your draw is long and your bow is cut past center.  We have the Predator II 20/40's which are a .600, and the Gold Tip 15/35's already mentioned are also a .600 spine.

.600 spine might work, but you may have trouble finding them long enough if you draw 29.5.  GT Entrada shafts soot very well out of my 42lb ILF rig.  Good luck and don't be afraid to try a lot of different point weights.
